A number of things can cause sputtering. Bits of rust flaking off the inside of the burner can cause this. Take the burner out, shake the rust out of it. The gas valve at knob can cause this. Is every burner doing this?

The pressure regulator at the tank could be sticky. Tap with rubber mallet. The gas gauge, is it attached to the tank? Tap that too.

There could be condensation in the gas line.

When you clean a grill, there's 2 areas of concentration.

1-Clean the grease and oil, so you don't get grease fires.

2- clean the mechanical aspects of the grill, such as rust, from the inside of the burners. And in the holes of the burners. Use a wire brush. Sick a wire in the holes too. And, you can also flush them with water.

If you have a decent grill, all parts are available online for replacement.

There was no rust thankfully when I cleaned it. I cleaned everything pretty meticulously beyond poking a wire into the holes.

Oh, and also, a very cold propane tank will produce very low pressure. And cause abnormal function. Try shaking the tank vigorously.

It seems to be okay now.. just the gauge isn't working. hrm.. i even did a reboot thing in case it was a cause of the limiter acting up.

It's at like 250-300, indirect heat, (only one burner is on out of 3)

I'm following the directions on the package of rub

It seems to be cooking but how accurate is the little temp gauge on a grill?

FYI the lid IS on..

That was before I closed the lid and decided to leave it closed

ribs weren't completely after I'd cleaned the grill. I cut some of them and they were done, but others weren't. so i put them in the oven for an hour. Too late to eat today... :(

Aww...

That's why I said turn on all the burners and cook them in the middle.

You can also wrap them in foil, remove foil after cooking, and turn grill on high for 5 minutes to sear them.

Ribs are a revered dish in hillbilly diet.

Except the Okies, in their case, they can only afford to revere rice...
