You guys should have moved to Northern Minnesota. ;)

My husband is a bit on my nerves with his lack of budgetary restraint yet again. So, I put him in charge of the budget since he managed his own when he lived alone. He finally gets we can't spend twice what we earn a month. Thank the ###### gods.

Haha no way I only moved here because it was warmer. I would have stay up in Canada if he lived somewhere cold :)

He's called 3 places to come out and gives us a quote. He actually called the guy I picked too, maybe he is learning something.

got a quote for a split system. About twice as much as a new furnace and a/c unit.

NY is too humid for swamp coolers.

NY is full of swamp systems. Mainly in the commercial sector...

That was the cause of the outbreak last year. Now you have to register them for annual inspection.

Now I sure don't know the prices in Colorado. But here, you can get , unit and installation, for a thousand bucks, and you get a 400 dollar rebate from con Edison.

It is a common sentiment, living up here is an acquired taste.

I am not looking forward to having to re-do our roof at some point. I think it was re-reroofed 3 or 4 years ago, but it wasn't done right. We already redid the flashing in a couple of areas. I also highly suspect that like our living room ceiling/roof structure that our kitchen one might need to be rebuilt as well.

Oh and our basement has been a giant puddle for almost a month. As soon as it starts to dry out again, another big rain comes and puddles it up again. I frankly am getting sick of standing in a puddle to do my laundry.

Not much to be done about it, though. The reason the Dane is working in southern MN this week is that up here all the new houses they were constructing are on hold because the foundations and ditches they dug are full of water.

do the basements not have proper drains or sump pumps?

Nope... over 4 grand here.

but lets be honest. I'd rather spend 8k overall (new furnace and a/c) and have my $100/month gas/electric bill than spend $1k on just cooling and have $400/month gas/electric bills!

That's $12K over the course of 10 years vs $48K.

Man who's building these houses?

Modern design and technology enables a house to be built practically anywhere. The same technology that keeps water in a pool, can keep water out of a foundation.

These must be some low budget foundations...

4k holy what are they marklan crazy?

And you lost me about the electric bill. These split systems are the most energy efficient air conditioners.

But if you get a new furnace, and you get split system AC. That's the most savings you'll get on your energy bill.

Oh yeah, that's the whole set up.

About 2400 bucks here for that system.

My basement has a drain and two sumps, but it just kind of skims the whole surface of the floor and pools in some places. After an initial rush of water, the only thing that helps is the dehumidifiers.

For the new houses, I think those things have yet to be installed because they had just dug holes for the foundations or just poured them. The water table can be close to ground level here at times. It has a proper name that I can't recall, but there is simply too much ground water in this part of the country. Even the farmers have systems in their fields that pump water out using drainage tiles.

I think my mother's ductless air conditioner was in the 3-4k zone installed or maybe even more. To properly install it where she lives, you need HVAC guys and electricians. The cost adds up.

Okay so even in the winter with my 43 year old furnace, I spent about $130 a month on gas/electric. (Only 1 option for bills out here and they're always combined.) You spend $400/month you said (down from $700.) To get a central a/c unit put in, I'd have to get a new furnace too. Let's say I spend 8k doing the furnace and the a/c unit. I figure if I do that my utility bill will still only be about $100 ish a month because the furnace would be more efficent than my old one.

I get that the split air system would be cheaper to run, except listening to my husband complain about how much he can't breathe due to the lack of humidity (which will likely happen anyhow on a central a/c but I can get a humidifier put in to the system as well.)

However, at 4k to put one in, it's still the same as a central a/c PLUS i have to pay for drywall, painting, probably extra for an electrician due to my aluminum wiring, and I lose wall space.

Even a split system would not lower my bill more than $80/month. That's the lowest I ever pay because of the hot water tank, the computers, the fridge, etc..

I'm saying I'm also glad i don't live in NY where the system is only 1k, because i'm glad I don't have to pay $400/month in gas/electric. I'll take having to pay more for the a/c and furnace than paying that much in bills.

Man I oughta set up a business for these split systems in Connecticut. They're really dirt cheap here installed.

I got 2 in one shot maybe 4 years ago. 1600? 9000 BTU units. Installed. And the prices are about the same now.

The Fujitsu I have is 10,000. I'm gonna do that one myself. For the loft.

But I gotta say, when Tiff has her thuggy friends over, those central units provide ###-kicking cooling power.
