Lol

I'm going to guess there was nothing to spend it on.

That's exactly right. He wasn't married for most of the time he was there, his friends left as they were stationed elsewhere and he never took vacation. He had like 3 months of paid vacation when he left the military so was getting pay checks until Jan 2012 when he left in Oct 2011. There's only so much you can do on a little island... Golf was super cheap, food could have been free on base, military paid for housing...

First quotes back from Sears for A/C. He really was pushing a swamp cooler. They won't install A/C on anything older than 18 year old furnace and mines from like 1973 (43 yrs.. for those of you who don't like math... or 2*2*2*2*2+2+2+2+2+1 for tbone... (which is WAY too much math for me tbone.. you need to cut out the p-math sheetz)

Anyhow 6700-10k. OUCH

I'm tempted to just buy window units for the two upstairs bedrooms.

Obviously not common here so no one sells or installs them. Most people have swamp coolers here because it's so dry.

And, this is not the only DIY model.

I have a Fujitsu system (considered the best in the business) in my basement now. Caught it on sale for 600. Been sitting there 2 years. Too lazy to install it. Well, because my house is cool...

My house has a dual zone central air system. 2 main units, 2 air handlers. 8 tons total. Before I added 2 splits to supplement them, the cooling bill in the summer was 700 a month. Now it's under 400.

Yeah but people just don't do them here. I get in NY where everything is vertical. And it would be handy since our only cold air return is in the middle of the house, not on the top floor, but a good evaporation cooler (swamp cooler) would take less money to run, and add humidity to the house in the summer at least.

I dunno what to do... The furnace will eventually need to be replaced because it's so old but I haven't saved up that much to do it. It would require financing to do that and the a/c and if I didn't already have the bike financed, I'd do that. However I could finance the entire cost of the furnace and pay off the bike or just finance 1/2 the cost of a new furnace and a/c. However, most likely I still wouldn't get Sears to do it since their furnace and a/c units don't rate very well with customer satisfaction. It's weird because Kenmore used to be such a good brand name that just kept on ticking.

I think Lennox is the way to go now, but still I'd have to finance! It's that or get a cheap a/c unit for both upstairs bedrooms for the next few years and save up for the whole system.

He gave me a rough quote on the siding too.. I wish my husband could do that himself, but he said about 20k. I know some of this stuff doesn't need to be done right now but I feel like I've moved into the eventual money pit. But I suppose all homes are like that at some point.

JEEZUS Steve.. $700/month?! $400 a Month?!?! My entire heating bill each month in the winter with my 43 year old furnace was $140 MAX!!! In the summer it costs us about $86/month

All homes are money pits.

But just because you don't see the split systems, doesn't mean it's not suitable for you. People are still catching on to them. These things aren't all over the place yet. But virtually ALL new construction uses them. They have a "non-dehumidifier" feature on them.

Most houses here have window ACs. My house is pretty ultra-modern for NYC.

got a quote for a split system. About twice as much as a new furnace and a/c unit.

Hey and I just remembered, there was a legionaires disease outbreak in NY last year due to these swamp coolers...

NY is too humid for swamp coolers.

So I went to the dentist yesterday, a cracked tooth was supposed to get prepped for a crown. Not fun to begin with, but it turns out the crack had a cavity in it. As the dentist is drilling happily away and saying, relax you lip please, for the manyth time, she decides to stop and take an x-ray. How the heck to you relax your lip when its already stretched to the max with many implements from both the dentist and the assistant, plus multiple chunks of cotton and a wedge forcing your mouth open? After removal of many implements and many pieces of cotton the assistant takes an x-ray and the dentist announces I need a root canal. So today I'm off to get the root canal completed, to be followed by two more visits to the dentist to finish prepping then installing the crown. Is it any wonder I hate dentists?

Story of my life.

My mother got this last year and it cools about half the house and she uses window ones in the bedrooms. It was much cheaper than other options because she doesn't have ducts.

All my utilites (heating, a/c, gas, electric, water, sewer, trash, and bug spraying) are almost always under $350 a month. Only extras are $5/month for the home phone and $56 for internet.

Oh I'm letting him stew in it alright. He hasn't been able to sleep because now he's freaking out and worried the roof is going to cave in.

I'm going to sit back and watch the guys work and then he can get himself a second job to stew some more.

I do not feel the tiniest bit sorry for him atm.

You can say I'm fed up

You guys should have moved to Northern Minnesota. ;)

My husband is a bit on my nerves with his lack of budgetary restraint yet again. So, I put him in charge of the budget since he managed his own when he lived alone. He finally gets we can't spend twice what we earn a month. Thank the ###### gods.
