Current U. S immigration laws states that for a person to qualify for a visit visa to the U. S such a person must have strong ties that will compel them to return back to their home country after the duration of their stay. Such a requirement is a little bit hard to meet for majority of the visa applicants and in return they are refused visas.

How are strong ties to home country being unreasonable here?

What do you propose to ensure that people would not overstay their tourist visa?

Also, with the immigrant visa applicants, they are made to undertake medicals, get police clearances all without any assurance of being issued with a visa.

There is NO such thing as guaranteed visa here.

Potential immigrant is required to do medical (to ensure one does not have infectious disease .. etc, in good health), get police records (to make sure you are not a criminal).

I consider these are bare minimum immigration hurdles that MOST countries should have for immigration purposes.

Immigrant visa applicants pay huge sums of money to undertake these medicals and police clearances and in the long run can't be promised if the visa will be issued or not.

Also, consular officers should not be given the sole power of issuing U. S visas.

Most at times that power is abused.

If you feel that CO is abusing power, you can go report them.

Otherwise, you sound like another disgruntled rejected visa interviewee because you can't get your visa.

OMG thank you. When this first posted I was going to comment and I deleted it. I agree there are things that should be changed within the visa system. These are not any of the changes I would want to see. I think we should allow people to come here and live without only having family or marriage as the 2 main ways. However they can fix that fine. This petition is nuts.

Most people I have actually met came here on work visa's.

That is fine. I mean there are some ways to come here but it should be a little easier to immigrate here and obtain citizenship. I am not saying drop all the requirements but families waiting years to bring their loved ones such as kids, mothers, brothers, sisters, fathers and what have you. I think it should be a little easier. I know people who came here on a student visa and work visas. I guess I am speaking more of the family type situations.

To be fair the US is extremely generous and favours Family immigration.

I do not know of any other first world countries that allow for example you to sponsor your sibling.

I think you are missing my point. lol I am not saying the visas we offer aren't fair. There is a whole list of visas people can come over on. I just think it's a little unfair to have someone wait years and years. That's all. But you are right. I guess our system is not that hard.

There certainly has been talk of doing away with the less obvious categories and concentrating on the more immediate family, but I doubt if anything will come of it anytime soon.

The process here is already extremely easy. The chances of me immigrating to China and getting citizenship are practically zero. I could get permanent resident status after 5 years, but almost no chance at citizenship.

How is it unfair? What does the US owe to a foreign citizen?

Have you looked at the immigration system to your country?

Have you looked at the immigration system to other countries?

Do you realize that it's easier for a family member to immigrate to the US than to most other countries?

I think America is surprisingly generous and helpful when it comes to immigration. I mean, yes, it takes a lot of time and money and sweat and tears, it can be very stressful and humiliating at times... But when you think about the tremendous numbers of people trying to get in by all possible and impossible ways, it all starts to make sense. It seems to me that America is trying to be as generous and open as possible without being careless.

That said, I do agree that getting a tourist visa can be unreasonably hard. Maybe it is easier for Europeans, but in Russia I know people with jobs, property and families who got denied a tourist visa to the US. I mean, if a job or family is not enough to show your ties to your country, what is?

Where did I say we owe anything to anyone. I am a US Citizen born and raised so yes I have looked into my country's immigration system. As I said the time length was unfair for some family members. And yes I have looked into other countries immigration system. Since you like to assume and put words in my mouth have YOU looked into other countries systems? I didn't say people should just be given citizenship...I simply said it should be a little easier meaning less time to wait to bring family here. God forbid am I not allowed to think something with the visa process is unfair? It's just my opinion...I never said it was fact. I mean it is okay to still have our own opinion right?
