VISITING US WHILE WAITING FOR K-1 VISA

Fiance and I just sent our I-129F package in the mail last week and it was delivered to destination today (April 20th, 2016). I am Canadian. He is currently in Canada working on Masters but is finishing up in a couple of months. He has a job lined up in the states and will start job August 1st. I am thinking of going to US on a visitor's visa to be with him when he leaves Canada, which will be towards the end of July. I am wondering how long I should/can go for. I think you can go for up to 6 months at a time??? I have no idea if K-1 Visa will be approved by then (February 1st, 2017). Wondering what others have done? Trying to decide if I should go on visitor visa (either fly or drive) for 6 months straight and wondering if anyone has any similar experiences or information to offer.

Visitors visas are for visiting, not living which is what you're proposing to do. Be prepared for possible scrutiny by cbp going for 6 months with little ties to Canada and a k1 visa in the works. However, stranger things have happened.

It won't take that long and you'll have to return for your medical and interview in Canada.

In theory, you could visit for 6 months. However, it's up to CBP if they will let you enter for that long. And, most likely, you will need to be back in the US to continue your K1 process much earlier...
