Look into secured credit cards. They require a deposit, and they typically have an annual fee. I got Capital One's secured credit card when I arrived in the U.S. Capital One also currently provides your FICO score on a monthly basis with this card. There are other option, including Discover, which does allow you to co-sign for a secured card with your husband (increasing the likelihood of approval). I don't believe Capital One allows co-signing for a secured card. Good luck!

I got a Capital One credit card (it was not secured). First it was only $300 limit, but it increased to a couple of thousands since.

I got a credit card with Bank of America. They say that it should start building a credit score after the first month. Other ways are store cards, getting an auto loan. The way the US does credit scores is a pain in the xxx for new immigrants but there's no way around it so he just has to try and get small credit and use it responsibly to slowly build credit. Never use more than 30% of credit on credit cards.

We exercise our cards every month and pay the balance every month, never late.

That's exactly what we did plus she also opened a secured card in her own name which she used to make a small purchase (and paid it off in full) each month.
