Tips on moving from State to State

Hey guys,

For those who have moved from State to another State, how do you guys do it? Do you visit the State before moving? Do you get a job interview/get a job at the State you are moving to first? Sell your car and buy one in the new residing State or drive all the way there? What are the things you look into when moving to a new State?

I would like to know more tips on how you guys start off with moving from State to State. As many information as possible!

Personally i would not change states unless I had a secure place to live (friends or family you trust) or a job already lined up. Preferably the latter Most people just take their own vehicle unless they're moving across the country. (New york to LA for example.)

How do you guys find a job in a different State? do you submit online and go for the interview when contacted? Or rent a place there, stay there for period of time to scout for jobs? Totally agree with you on that, finding a job there is the most important part.

I would love to hear more on how some of you manage to do it. Thanks!

Before moving, it's worth checking to see whether the state has a State Income Tax, and how onerous it is. In addition, check state & local property taxes, if and when you register your cars or want to buy a home.

It's up to you whether to try to get a job first, or move and then try to get one.

Where do you live now? and why do you want to move?

Most people move because of job opportunities or love. Look online on Career/jobs sites (indeed.com/CareerBuilder.com etc...) to see if you can find jobs that interests you and what state they are in, apply for the jobs and wait for a response.

Some people move for the lower cost of living, or a more children friendly environment. For example some people leave NYC because a nice house there can cost a million dollars compared to a similar house in Florida which could cost a quarter of that or even less.

I moved from Canada to the US with my car, drove it across the border. I then moved to 3 different states, and I always kept my car. I either drove my car state to state or had it shipped depending on the price of gas and how much it cost to ship.

I definitely suggest you to research and visit the cities that you are interested in moving to.

We are not moving, but my husband has an offer to transfer to LA or NY. We are still considering. Im looking for job opportunities for myself.

Plus with our plans of having baby next year and thinking for our future kid's education.

I'll be visiting around NY etc next week and gonna check out the cities. We have relatives there, we want to be close to families and friends.

You might wanna check. 1.Jobs 2.Housing 3.Weather. Do research or much more go there in person to check. If you move to a different state w/o a job yet make sure you have a savings or else money will go away very quickly. Or find a job first before moving. (probably a smarter choice)
