As much as I agree with some people....My personal view is why would you want to stay here if the relationship didn't work out. Yes some people only came here for a green card (not saying that about OP) and yes some people should go home...but I say that because it is so hard to start a life on your own as an immigrant in this country. It can be lonely so why not go home to your family. However, whatever her reason for wanting to say it is up to her. Is there really domestic violence we don't know. But last I checked this really wasn't a website set up to judge others which many people do on here. The immigrant isn't always right and neither is the citizen. Yet many times people say well the immigrant gave up their lives in their country. Not to sound rude they had a choice....most don't have to be forced to come here if they didn't want to be here or come here they wouldn't...sorry but no matter how good life is the person leaving their country makes the decision....so using this as an argument is absurd. There are 2 sides to every story and we as readers don't know both sides nor do we truly know the whole store....that being said...

OP contact the police. He can not legally hold your documents. They are yours and they are important for you to have.

Contact a domestic violence shelter. Will you become a public charge from this...maybe or maybe donations will help you get on your feet...Honestly, it doesn't matter save your life.

GET AN ATTORNEY!! You can call legal services in your area go to google and type in legal service in __________ put in whatever county or city you are in. They will help you. They help immigrants and low income individuals who can't afford and attorney for civil matters such as domestic violence and divorce...there are others too but they will help you.

If you want to leave you can always find organizations to help you pay for a flight. If you don't want to leave it is not impossible to get on your own 2 feet and be productive in society. There are reasons why laws are put into place to protect people who are going through this. Be safe and I wish you the best. Come back and give us a good update.
