so I found out my contract is definitely up on April 13th (Friday the 13th, how comforting! ) and I have to start looking for work again.

I HATE JOB HUNTING.

There, I said it. There's nothing more annoying, more aggravating to me than to try and find a job. It drives me crazy.

I hate it I hate it I hate it I hate it!

MY problem is that since I have moved to the US, it has been very difficult to find anything remotely related to my previous career in Canada. So in desperation I've worked in collections and most recently in medical records. I don't know if I should pursue alternative jobs, or keep trying to find something in my field, bearing in mind that my most recent work experience in that field was in 2004.

I just feel like my skills, that I worked really hard to gain and become proficient in are wasting away, and frankly, it makes me very very sad.

/end sad venting.

Sorry to hear that you have to start job hunting again.

I have a cousin who works for a call center...actually she's worked for several. She just started at "AMERICAN EXPRESS" and makes good money. She likes it and says it's pretty easy money.

She told me all someone has to do is go to their website and be sure you have a calculator with you and that the tests that you do there are timed.

Just an idea.

Best of Luck job hunting!

Sorry to hear your news, I would get any job you fancy but then keep looking actively for the job you are qualified to do. This is one of the toughest parts of moving to a new country.

Good Luck

If you are job hunting again, try looking for employers who are seeking permenant employees. That way you can have career growth and not have to worry about a contract expiring and having to job hunt again.

Have you considered going to college? Or if you have a degree, what about getting a teaching certificate?

Sorry to hear that CAs. I'm in my mid 30's and commencing a RN program this fall, and I hate school!! I'm sure soemthing will pop up. My ex worked in the unemployment industry--they would get referalls from the EI people--they would give them job hunting skills and other things. As I recal most jobs that are available are not even advertised, thus one has to hit the streets and get those resumes out. Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Have you considered going to college? Or if you have a degree, what about getting a teaching certificate?

I already have a degree in History, and a partially finished MA. If I were to go back to school, I want to take courses more specific to museum studies, and I am not sure if any of the local universities offer any. Oh yeah, and I need some spare cash to do that. :(

Not sure if I want to go into teaching, I really don't have the patience to deal with children all day!

If you are job hunting again, try looking for employers who are seeking permenant employees. That way you can have career growth and not have to worry about a contract expiring and having to job hunt again.

I have been, in the field that I am skilled in trained in. Since that wasn't working, I took what I could get. Hence the temporary position.

I just found a new job myself. Its my 5th since I got my EAD :o I start on the 29th. My current job was giving me so much stress and anxiety I was getting chest pains, so I started looking about 2 weeks ago. Luckily there was a receptionist job open at a local furniture manufacturer. Maybe I'll hold onto this one for at least a year! ;)

I dunno if it is this town, or this state, or the employment environment in this country in general, but I just can't stomach taking the ####### they dish out for the measly salary. I started out as front desk clerk in a motel for $5.75 an hour. 8 hour shifts with no meal break and no relief. Waaaaaaay too stressful. And barely legal I might add. :P

Then I went to a photography studio, where I was making $9.75 an hour for an average of 45 or 50 hour weeks for a few months. Then they cut my hours to 40 hours per month!. I quit that and went to work for hubby at Domino's. He then quit, leaving me with a dimwit manager who hated me, who proceeded to degrade and infuriate me to the point that I walked out. I've *never* done that before in my entire life!

Then I started at the newspaper, where I was hired to do data entry for the advertising sales team. Easy peasy. Then a whole bunch of people quit, and they moved a whole bunch of people around, including moving me to the reception desk, while still doing data entry, plus bank deposits and now ciruclation complaints. Of which there are hundreds every day. :P ugh. The chest pains started about 3 weeks ago, and I hit the classified page.

Hopefully the furniture factory won't be closing up shop to head for China any time soon! *snarf*

I hope you have better luck Cassie! Hang in there!

I feel for you!!! I hate job hunting too!

I've worked for the same company for 12 years and have been in the position of competing for projects now for the past 5 years due to being classed as a "consultant" . . .It makes my stomache hurt and I get depressed because I always feel like no one is picking me!! LOL, also most of the time they want you to fly off to another city for work, which I really don't like doing week in and week out (hey, trips to Hong Kong are exempted as long as it is only once a month but I rolled off that project in October). I've tried to find another job outside of the company but the interviews are so ludicrous . . . i.e. technical interviews by guys who apparently don't know as much as I do but always ask questions about areas/experience that aren't even on my resume . . . not sure why, but I have a theory that I won't share.

Unfortunately, I am in a position now where leaving the company would mean a big cut in pay and it is hard to beat the fact that many times I work with the same people then I get to go off and work with people I don't know . . . I like changing up things. Plus there is a certain amount of flexibility when on the bench right now since things are going well.

But, yes, I hate job hunting . . . hope that you can find something you like to keep you going for awhile.
