I'm glad that you are accepting and understanding of that transitioning male standing next to you at a urinal OriZ... now if only we could only get the rest of the male public on board with that, and stop violent physical and sexual assaults against gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals in public restrooms (often perpetrated in the men's room). Would your wife be also accepting of a transitioning female that looks completely like a man (facial hair and all) pre-op entering the bathroom? Or would she be fearful that a true man has entered the female restroom to assault someone?

You see unless you ask someone for a genital check, based on appearances often no one has no idea someone's true gender.

We have plenty of them walking down the streets of downtown Burlington daily. Nobody assaults them. I just think they should use the appropriate bathroom. If any man can dress up as a woman and walk into the ladies room just so they can check some girls out there's something wrong with that.

But that's the whole point OriZ: you cannot tell the difference in most cases between a transitioning pre-op female using the women's restroom and an actual man.

So if there is a fear of an actual man entering a female space for some nefarious reason, how do determine the difference between that person and the transgender female based on appearance without a genital check? A law does not stop a male perv from throwing on a dress and entering the ladies room. It didn't before, and it won't now.

The instant fearful reaction a woman may have at seeing what appears to be a man enter the bathroom is based on physical appearance alone, which does not confirm their gender. A man in a dress may actually be just a completely ugly woman. You seek to protect your wife from an actual man from entering that bathroom and causing trouble, but a pre-op female looks like a man on the outside... So you can only assume the person is a man, and thus be fearfully alarmed, when the person (based on your genital to bathroom idea) has every right to be there.

North Carolina's HB2 law was passed in response to Charlotte's passage of a law allowing such self-identification, thereby nullifying it. Presumably, the voters of Charlotte, in their wisdom, elected forward thinking legislators. AND, should the law not work out, have unintended consequences, or other scary things happen, I assume that the duly elected legislators of Charlotte would change the law, tweak it, or enact supplemental laws to provide for all rights to be honored. Also, should the legislators not do the bidding of the Citizens of Charlotte, they could be replaced by ones who would.

But the legislators of North Carolina, in their "wisdom", decided that they knew what Charlotte wanted better than Charlotte did. So they created this horrible law, preventing LGBT people from suing for discrimination, among other things. (Like preventing any locality from enacting a higher minimum wage than the state)

Hopefully, the backlash from companies doing business in NC, and the boycotting by musicians, sports teams, and conventions, will convince North Carolina's legislators of the error of their ways. Unfortunately, being politicians, they cannot admit a mistake, so they probably won't.

I do understand the difference, and you have refused to answer the question now several times.

There is indeed a difference between a man becoming a woman, a woman becoming a man, and a man who wants to pretend to become a woman (I presume you mean a pervert peeping tom/rapist... though I tend to think that this particular individual doesn't need to pretend to be anything at all to enter the woman's room, and the majority simply enter because they feel they can do whatever they please).

What, you don't think men have felt they can do as they please and have entered a woman's bathroom with or without a law before? They don't have to even 'identify' or 'feel' as you put it, as a woman to enter. You can find tons of men admitting they have used a woman's bathroom from time to time, not because they identify, belong doing so, or even because they are pervy - it's because they simply can and will and they got to pee. They enter because the men's room is filled or out of order, they enter because they went in the wrong door, they enter with their daughters etc. They enter, because they feel like it.

Transgender pre-op women enter a men's room because there is nothing about them that isn't a man already except for their genitalia. Transgender pre-op men use the women's room much the same, because when they are *forced* to use a restroom based on their genitalia, it's not only dangerous for them to do so due to harassment, physical and sexual assault, and threats - they are actually trying to be courteous to other individuals in that bathroom who may panic thinking an actual man or a pervert is standing in the ladies room or an actual woman is standing in the men's room. Since you can only judge a person entering a public restroom by their physical appearance, rather than their genitalia - no one freakin' cares who enters a bathroom so long as that person: minds their own business and is not doing so for nefarious reasons. We're all there to pee, not to compare or worry what's under our clothing. Most of us don't want to use one in the first place.

No kidding. Ya know why? Well I know you know why. Because all we know is by physical appearance. So unless you have a TSA scanner performing genital checks, law or law - no one is the wiser, nor does it prevent perverts from entering either room.

When I was in college oh so many years ago, I often saw women using the men's room at the football stadium. It was no big deal, not really much to see and they usually headed for the stalls as opposed to the urinal troughs. I don't think they were identifying as men, they were simply trying to circumvent the long lines at the ladie's room. I didn't see a lot of men going to the women's restrooms for obvious reasons.

The main issue I see is with the laws de-genderizing bathrooms. They seem to include some unintended consequences which may give rise to perverts which would require law changes, but what would those entail? Does an TG person need to register and get a card? Do they need to notify someone? Did the non-activist TG community really want them?
