Do any of you worry about whether or not your husband will be able to find a good job once they get here......preferably in their field of study.....and do you wonder how perhaps difficulty in finding a good job may affect your SO's mental state of mind?

I really did worry because my husband did not finish college and getting a transcript of what he did take does not have the same meaning in Morocco as it does here. So, I knew it was going to be an entry level job at first. I really prepared him for this. When he first started working at a local grocery store on his temporary EAD, he was just so happy to be working. It really helped his English skills, made him realize that he is not the only immigrant here, and started to get him adjusted to the American way of life. He now has a more than entry level job that does frustrate him at times. However, he has made amazing friends there and I constantly tell him this is the reason why he is in college -- to get the job he really wants!

Yes this is a big worry of mine, Because I know how he feels when he is not working. Also we will be moving as well, because the area I am living know there is not hardly any arabic, and I want to be in a area that he feels comfortable in and for my daughter who is half black as well. If anyone knows of a great arabic community and that is well diversed please let me know. I am willing to move after I get my degree.

I'm from NJ and there are a lot of Arabs in certain cities within the state.....NJ is also pretty diverse. Michigan I know also has a lot of Arabs as do certain towns in the Bay Area in California.

I am so worried about this! My husband will NOT be able to get a job in his field here, as he needs to get his PhD to have any qualifications this side of the atlantic. Which is fine, it's part of why he is coming. But! This means he'll be stuck in a ####### job and I am so worried he will be miserable.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Being in Michigan and so close to Dearborn and other Arab friendly communities is the reason why I don't worry too much. Mo plans on getting his degree translated but he's not counting on it helping him 100%. What I mean is, he's willing to work any job until he can get one using his degree.

I'm not worried only because my husband is in sales and you can basically get any job in sales as long as you're good. He works for himself at the moment but before that he was a regional sales mgr for a company much like staples. We have a staples within walking distance from my house (on a sunny day..the other days he can take the bus), and they're always looking for help and the employees there now are quite diverse so I'm not really too scared that he won't get a job there. Granted it won't be at the level he was used to but he'll need time to get acclamated to the environment/language anyways so it's all good.

I don't have much time to read through the whole thread so if I repeat, just ignore my post. Ha ha. The whole work thing really does seem to be an issue for many SOs entering the country, especially from the MENA. I know what we went through when Moh was not working. He was depressed, angry, and feeling useless. We also discovered that him pushing too hard too fast to adapt and work wasn't the best thing to do either (but of course I couldn't TELL him that... rather he didn't want to hear it.) As I explained to him, he needs to focus first on establishing an employment history here complete with a good sound reference at a simple job that won't over-tax him and give him time to get his equilibrium here. Then he can scout out "the" job after he has that under his belt. He's an impatient man who wants to do it all right NOW, but he has now experienced the turbulence he put himself into and agrees with my philosophy. As far as finding that "simple job" he has had absolutely no trouble.

ya i definitely plan on him getting it translated into english....but can i translate/convert the credits to american/accredited credits before he comes? or do we have to wait?

He is not going to go to school when he comes here right? I'm not sure he'd need to convert the credits if he's all done with school. He would just put down his schooling on his resume. I would contact a place like NYU and make pretend he's wanting to apply there and ask them what he would need to do. At least that will give you some sort of a starting point. I know that BU has an international department so that is who I would contact. They don't need to know he's not actually applying. You're just looking for info. ;) Also, try contacting a headhunter that specializes in his field. Tell them he is coming here in the summer and you need to know what he needs to bring in terms of proof of employment.

Good luck!
