I think what a lot of folks don't get is that whenever you give up something, it's gone. If there's not enough for those who are entitled to it, how will there be enough for those who aren't? You're advocating giving up what separates a citizen and legal permanent resident from an illegal who broke the law. You want to make them the same, but they aren't, nor should they be. There's nothing logical that says the US, if it wants its citizenry to prosper, must allow the importation of poverty and illiteracy that it is required to rememdy while its own citizens and those who came here legally are pulled down by the lowest among them and forced to compete with the most competent among them. They aren't supposed to be here, we should not be forced to pay their way and become equal with them, which is what some here seem to want.

There's also nothing logical that says that an illiterate can or would secure a college place. That would seem to be a contradiction in terms ;)

You clearly missed something. I said nothing about illiterates going to college.

You're making the assumption that illegal immigrants and their children are poor (probably true) and illiterate (contentious) and that educational standards are being lowered as a result.

I guess because I'm not willing to make generalisations about large numbers of people ;)

I doubt that there is anything I can say to you that doesn't sound defensive because that's what you want to think, but since that is a subjective determination, I can live with that.

I'm waiting for the predictable bleeding heart replies from the open borders folks. College going illegals will not be scubbing your floors, they will be taking your jobs.

hahahaha here's a bleeding heart reply that will surprise you....I posted this on another site. Apologies for not reading this whole thread before posting.....

"We should all be under a microscope! Every time we eat out, buy a new condo, have our lawn mowed, buy groceries, etc. we are supporting illegal immigration. Every time a general contractor hires a subcontractor there should be a microscope! Maybe if we would stop being so greedy we would pay people a decent wage and the salary bases for jobs would be fair, instead of constantly undercut by the next wave of illegals.

If we have such a big problem with Americans not wanting to do certain jobs and there are so many of those jobs, then let's make immigration totally fair - increase the annual country quotas. How many people from Darfur would like to have the opportunity to come here? Iraq? Bugaria? Romania? Vietnam? China? Ivory Coast? Congo? Maybe we could take in the Central American illegals going into southern Mexico who are poorly treated by the Mexicans?

Let's keep the immigration from countries balanced as it was meant to be. Millions of people, legal or not, from one country is not fair, is not balanced, and does not create the melting pot we all want America to continue to be. So to that I say send all the illegals home. You want to come back? Do it legally, just like you neighbor did. When your country meets its annual quota, try again next year.

My heart goes out to all the people of the world who are truly, and I mean truly, economically, politically and religiously persecuted who do not have the luxury of a border with the United States.

One last note, I am a liberal, the bleeding heart kind that can still recognize b.s. when I see it."

good post amwo

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

The lack of balance is why we're pressing 1 for English and the other language is Spanish.

The country we should have open borders with is Iraq. We destroyed their country, least we can do is let 'em all in so they can compete with the Mexicans and the Indians and the Polacks for the American dream.

Polish, Ari, not Polacks.

We let in that rectum guy from Iraq. They're pretty shell shocked and need to be screened too.
