Social Security 1 Day After POE

Hello,

First, I'd like to say this website was an amazing resource in our K-1 journey. Everything in the guides thus far has been spot on and our case went through every step with no issues. There does seem to be some conflicting info though regarding exactly how long you should wait after entry to apply for a SSN. Well we figured we'd give it a shot the day after entry and if my fiancee wasn't in the SAVE system, we would just come back later. She entered through DFW airport on Sunday and we went to Social Security on Monday with the printed electronic I94 and passport. She was in the SAVE system and was approved for the card. It should be here within a week. It seems that this process is very automated now and might not take weeks like it might have in the past. YMMV. :)

My fiancee's POE was in Seattle on Sunday, April 10, 2016. She filed for social security number the following day Monday and had no problems either. The reason we filed for it is we need it for marriage license application by April 30, 2016. She checked computer while holding and staring at my filipino fiancee's K-1 Visa and told us everything looks good and we would receive it within two weeks.

Good to hear.

A K-1 entrant used to have to wait back when paper I-94s were still being issued. Now that they are automated, that wait time no longer applies.

~ Moved from K-1 Process to Social Security Numbers - topic about SSN~

You don't have to wait two weeks anymore, but unfortunately I can fill you in on what happens if you are not in the database yet. I also went one day after POE (both were weekdays) with my printout of the I-94 in hand. They still took my application but said as I was not in the database yet it will take about 4 weeks to process. They said I was not the only one in this position. Still no Ssn as of today.

We told the guy that we would like to apply for a SSN only if she was in the SAVE system. They guy told us no problem and if she was in it then he would push it through, and if not then he would cancel the application for us, avoiding that whole 4 week wait. We probably just had someone who knew what they were doing at the social security office...

Hello, are you sure about that? I read in many places that you don't need to have a SSN to get married, you can do it whether before or after with K1 visa. Can someone clarify this?

Thanks

IF you have a SSN, you must provide it on the Marriage License application. If you do not have a SSN you cannot provide it and they will still issue the Marriage License.

I just applied for a marriage license without a SS number. It was issued on the spot and she never asked for one.

Which leads me to the question as to what reason I give the people at the SS office for SS number. Seems like it is not really necessary and the website states that it will only be issued with a valid work permit
