Are you sure you are reading the correct information? If you father is a US citizen the requirements are different, only 5 years in their life in the US and 2 years after their 14th birthday. See: https://www.uscis.gov/us-citizenship/citizenship-through-parents

One parent is a U.S. citizen at the time of birth and the birthdate is on or after November 14, 1986

The U.S. citizen parent had been physically present in the U.S. or its territories for a period of at least five years at some time in his or her life prior to the birth, of which at least two years were after his or her 14th birthday.

I'm currently in the US as permanent resident since 2002 but must be citizen in order to work for the VA or as a military officer.

And my father does not meet the requirements of 5 year residency prior to birth including 2 years after birth that was posted above.

You became a US citizen in 2002 immediately after you became a permanent resident. Under INA 320, if at any time after February 27, 2001, all three of these conditions are met at the same time: 1) you are under 18, 2) you are a permanent resident, 3) you are residing in the US with a US citizen parent, you automatically become a citizen.

As a US citizen you can get a US passport at any time as proof of citizenship.
