Evidence of US Citizenship - passport page for joint sponsor

Hi all,

As part of the I-864, our joint sponsor is proving his US Citizenship. I'm aware that US passports count for this, as do birth certificates as per the instructions for the form.

We've decided that we'll use the joint sponsor's US passport as that evidence. Will a photocopy of just his passport photopage suffice? (i.e. not every single page). The guidance in the instructions read as: "Proof of U.S. citizen or U.S. national status includes a copy of your birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, certificate of citizenship, consular report of birth abroad to U.S. citizen parents, or a copy of the biographic data page of your U.S. passport"

My question comes up because that guidance on proving US Citizenship for the I-864 differs from that of the K1 petition. The guidance for the I-129F instructions reads: "What documents do you need to show that you are a U.S. Citizen? [...] In place of any of the above, you may submit a copy of your valid, unexpired U.S. passport issued with a validity period of at least 5 years. You must submit copies of all pages in the passport". As such, when we submitted our K1 petition we sent a photocopy of every page of my fiancee's passport including the front cover.

There is inconsistency I'd prefer minimising the information requests and effort required from our joint sponsor (we already have all the other documentation on the way for when we do submit our AOS package). The K1 petition reads: "

I would go with the form instructions....biographic page. Do what it say and don't overthink or apply a different form to it.

I-129F is a visa petition. I-864 is an affidavit of support. Two completely different things.

Follow the form instructions and you will be ok. In this case the form instructions state that the biographic information page from a passport is acceptable.

Each form has their own instructions. You should follow the instructions of each form you are filing The I-129F petition instructions are for the petitioner to prove they are citizen and eligible to file that form and have their foreign fiance(e) become eligible to apply for a K-1 visa. They want the whole passport scanned in that case, if there is no copy of US birth or naturalization certificate. And since the petitioner proves their citizenship with the I-129F petition, they are not required to prove it again with the I-864. Only a joint sponsor needs to do this. The ways for a joint sponsor to prove they are a US citizen or permanent resident are spelled out in the I-864 instructions. Follow those instructions, as that is the form the joint sponsor is submitting.

Wonderful, thank you all! I appreciate your help! I had always considered the proof of US Citizenship would have be a consistent absolute irrespective of the immigration form, but I am apparently wrong (albeit I recognise that the request for all passport pages serves multiple purposes beyond proof of citizenship).
