Copies or Originals :(

Hi,

I was just talking to my immigration consultant from WI. My husbands parents sent us all certified copies of their civil documents (birth certificate, marriage, police records, court records etc).

The immigration consultant told me that I would need to submit originals to NVC. Their website clearly states they need copies. We are sending them copies, and they look like copies as well, but they have a stamp on the back that says it has been certified. Did any of you have these issues, where NVC sent you a checklist because something was not original? I am so confused, or are these immigration consultants overreacting? I hope my mother in law will not have to send us all originals again :( I would like to confirm if any of you have sent copies and did not receive checklist that something was wrong.

  • You must send photocopies of all required civil documents to the NVC.
  • You must submit the originals (or certified copies) and a photocopy of each of your required civil documents to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at the time of your interview.

USCIS and NVC used to want originals, but that has changed since--the instructions are correct and copies are fine. The beneficiaries do have to take their original civil documents (certified copies should also be acceptable, but that might depend on the embassy) with them to the interview though.

I concur. I would send what is expressly stated in the application instructions. You will need the originals (or certified copies) at the interview ... (as well as more copies).

They accepted my certified copies just a little while ago so you should be good to go. Have originals prepared for when you go to the embassy though.

They accept them, but only photocopies are needed for anything below the embassy or consulate level unless specifically asked for by the NVC or USCIS.

From at I read, they said the NVC will forward all original documents to the embassy and ur parents will get them back at the interview.

Was that wrong or is it right?

They keep a copy of everything, so if you didn't send a photocopy in the first place they will need to keep the original, unless you request it back I believe.

Also, the embassys often like to misplace things so its best to have an original/copy of everything you sent and bring it to the interview incase they don't have it.

Thats how it used to work. You sent your originals to the NVC who forwarded everything onto the Embassy or consulate. Then at interview you got it back. Now the NVC juat wants a photocopy and you take originals to interview.

Ok. That makes so.much sense. So that means I can send in just photocopies and it doesn't have to be certified?

Yes. Unless they ask for an original or certified copy specifically, a regular photocopy is all that's needed.

Ok great. Thank u. I appreciate that. I'll just have my mom scan the documents to me and I'll print them.here

Just so you understand a certified copy is a copy from the issuer.
