Getting married was always an option but you stated you didn't want to get married anytime soon.

To answer your question if she has her work visa and is here working she will be able to visit home.

So getting married during this process would be easier? I read somewhere to where she would be able to go back home to visit family during that period, Is that true? Thanks again guys! You are really helping me out!

Your girlfriend might be qualified for a TN Work Visa as a professor. If she is and does find a job in Michigan, she could live there for up to 3 years at a time. That would eliminate your need to get married right away.

Check out this link and see what she thinks. https://www.uscis.gov/working-united-states/temporary-workers/tn-nafta-professionals

Good luck. My wife is from Windsor as well.

So as long as she has a work Visa, we can get married, say 2 years from now and during that period she can still go back to Canada? I know I have seen if we went the "get married routine" she would be able to go back to Canada, is that true?

Pull My Finger:), She has mentioned to me that a TN Work Visa is an option. If she did that, does she need to apply for a work visa over here? How does that work?

I believe she needs to apply upon an entry into the US and be inspected. So she would need to find a job and then apply at a border crossing. In her case either Ambassador Bridge or The Windsor Tunnel. Everything should be in the link I posted. The TN Visa is one of the easiest to get.

Yes, she said all she has to is go there and pick it up. It sounds very easy. Then she has to do the same for her future employer in the states? Or does the TN cover both sides?

It's all in the link, read it through.

Canadian Citizens

If you are a Canadian citizen, then you are not required to apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate.

You may establish eligibility for TN classification at the time you seek admission to the United States by presenting required documentation to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at certain CBP-designated U.S. ports of entry or at a designated pre-clearance/pre-flight inspection station. You must provide the following documentation to the CBP officer:

  • Proof of Canadian citizenship;
  • Letter from your prospective employer detailing items such as the professional capacity in which you will work in the United States, the purpose of your employment, your length of stay, and your educational qualifications; and
  • Credentials evaluation (if applicable), together with any applicable fees.

Please refer to CBP’s website for additional information and requirements for applying for admission to the United States. If a CBP officer finds you eligible for admission, you will be admitted as a TN nonimmigrant.

Alternatively, a prospective TN employer may choose to file on behalf of a Canadian citizen who is outside the United States by submitting Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker to USCIS. Premium Processing Service is available.

If USCIS approves Form I-129, you, the prospective worker, may then apply to CBP for admission to the United States as a TN nonimmigrant by providing the following documentation to a CBP Officer at certain CBP-designated U.S. ports of entry or at a designated pre-clearance/pre-flight inspection station:

  • Proof of Canadian citizenship; and
  • Approval Notice from USCIS for Form I-129.

In addition, when applying for admission, you should have in your possession a copy of the Form I-129, and all supporting documentation that was submitted to USCIS, to respond to questions about your eligibility. You should also be prepared to pay any applicable inspection fees at the time you seek admission. If a CBP officer finds you eligible for admission, youwill be admitted as a TN nonimmigrant.

I'm from Windsor too. Best of luck jasonml18... as someone said earlier it seems like you're so close but still have many hurdles to jump for immigration. Very doable though!

Down by the river? I love staying at Caesars when we visit, little pricey but much more fun.

When I lived there I enrolled me and my then fiance into the Caesars Rewards program and by spending a few bucks there and eating at the restaurants we were comped rooms quite a few times. There are some other casinos in many different locations that are affiliated with this program (including Vegas) so you end up getting comped rooms all over the place. I thought the casinos in Cleveland (where I am now) were part of that and we wanted to keep rolling with the free room program but we haven't actually checked it out because we haven't needed the rooms yet. If you enjoy the whole casino thing look into that! It's worth it... those rooms are like $200-300 otherwise! You can even merge 2 accounts to further the likelyhood of discounts/comps so make sure you and your wife enroll.

I grew up in South Windsor but spent most of my adult life moving around central Windsor.

I'm not really big into the casino thing, but I do like staying at Caesars when in Windsor. The rooms are a bit of an upgrade compared to a Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn. The views of the Detroit River at Caesars are great and the restaurants are really good too. I play a bit of black jack but I don't go too crazy. We usually walk about 5 miles everyday along the river when there.

Have you ever eaten at Nico's on Erie St. or Laguardia on Pitt St? Both really good Italian restaurants.

No, I never did visit Erie or Pitt street very often. We were regulars at Mamo Burger on Ottawa though!

The area on Erie st. where Nico's is has the nickname of "Little Italy", there are quite a few Italian restaurants and shops in that area.

Never ate at Mamo Burger, lol. I have been to Licks though. One time we were in line waiting for our lunch and the guy behind the counter shouted out some type of chicken sandwich and then followed up by yelling "gobble gobble". We both cracked up laughing.

I apologize to the op for hijacking your thread with our small talk, but i think he's gotten the info he needs.
