Were in the process of applying for permanent resident and they sent a letter requesting some additional documents, one being the form I-171 (Notice of Approval from the Consular Office).

Ive phoned the national customer service center many times, and each time they dont know how to get a copy of this form. They usually refer me to some other government phone number, but when I phone those, they dont know anything about that form.

Does anyone here know how to get a copy of that form? I-171?

Thanks in advance, Gerry.

What type of visa did you enter on? Your profile lacks details that helps us answer questions, timeline and/or details in profile helps answer questions.

:time:

I have not heard of a I-171, I have heard of a I-797 Approval Notice of Action. If that is what you mean you can order a replacement on using I-824, and paying a $200 fee to USCIS

I entered the States on a K1 fiancee visa. When I applied for the permanent resident process, they asked for a copy of form I-797 and/or a copy of form I-171. I didnt receive either so Ive sent in a request for the 797 and im trying to find out how to get a copy of 171, but no one seems to know anything about it. Ive contacted the montreal consulate *in canada* and they dont know anything about getting a copy either.

Isn't this the I-797 commonly called "NOA2" around here? The petition approval that was sent to your USC sponsor? Did you originally include that with your AOS application?

I've never heard of anyone getting their hands on an I-171.

I've never heard of anyone getting their hands on an I-171.

My wife *sponsor* didnt receive at least 3 things that she should have. A couple of the forms were things involving the I-797 and the 3rd being the form I-171. According to uscis she should have received those 3 things, and the address they have is correct, but she didnt get any of them.

When I mailed off the forms for the I-485 I just sent in a few things that I had. The person on the national customer service center said that I only needed to send the information I had, if they needed the forms/info that was missing, they would just ask for it later.

Since then they have requested more info, forms I-797 and/or I-171.

I dont know if the and/or means I need 797 or 171, or if it means I need 797 and 171, or just 171. Im trying to get both just incase.

Im not familiar with "noa2".

Wow, were you misinformed. The I-485 form states clearly what forms are needed to file, did you read that?

Two people have told you an 171 is not a form we use in immigration. Yet you persist in asking. PLease read their answers.

In that case, I'm sorry that I don't know the next step to tell you. How did your sponsor/wife know that her I-129f petition was approved? That letter is the "NOA2" discussed earlier. It is time consuming to get a replacement--perhaps someone will come by to let us know how you correct this kind of situation.

My only other idea is to contact your interiewing Consulate and beg for a copy of that notice, but I do not think they keep any of your info abroad--all of it was in the Mysterious Brown Envelope that you handed over when you first came to the US.

AND/OR means just that, If you have both then send them both (AND), if you only have one OR the other then just send what you have. (OR) (IF you have just the I-797 (NOA2) send them a photo copy of that form, never send them the original, unless you want them to loose it and then request that you send them another.

I understand that multiple people have said 171 is not a form used in immigration, but I also know its one of the forms requested in the uscis letter. Which is why I was hoping someone would know something about it.

In that case, I'm sorry that I don't know the next step to tell you. How did your sponsor/wife know that her I-129f petition was approved? That letter is the "NOA2" discussed earlier. I got a package/checklist asking for a bunch of forms and documents to be submitted after we sent in the I-129f forms, so we knew it was approved.

Thanks for the help everyone. I do appreciate it.

For future reference I am applying for a CR1 visa for my spouse. We both live in China and have filed abroad (in China). I have recently received a form labeled I-171 which is titled Approval Notice of Relative Immigrant Visa Petition.

So yes, this form does exist and I believe it is the equivalent to the NOA2 or I-797 that most people are talking about who file in America.

I also have had little luck with my searches relating to the I-171 so I'm guessing it's for those filing abroad...

I know this post is really old, but I wanted others who are searching to know this information...
