Hey there! welcome to Georgia!! I just brought lotsa food, clothes and K1 documents when I first came. Basically buy everything here, bring more money along with you cos u need them.

Just want to let everyone here be aware of, my husband have just received a call from a man who claimed to be from IRS claiming that he did not pay enough of taxes and that they are going to arrest him. He thought he did something wrong and got a huge shock from it. The funny part kicked in when he asked for CASH CHECK and even knows our address, he said that the IRS guys will come over to pick the check, which is weird, he even knows details of my husband. Previously we got an experience from credit card fraud when I first came to US where we bought furniture from IKEA, someone from IKEA delivery used our credit card he called up and pretend to double check on our address and credit card confirmation, (beware of that too cos theres only one IKEA in Georgia) lesson learnt. So anyway, my husband called the police with his coworker's phone and placed both on speakers, the police asked that guy about his staff ID info, he hung up right away. The police said its been going around in Georgia lately. Just beware if you guys receive calls from IRS asking for stuffs.

Thanks so much for sharing this information, I will be sure to share this with my relatives in GA. IKEA was where I was planning to go to get some furniture when we move to GA.

It Can happen anywhere you use you card or other information.

it just happened to my parents at the airport. There are rotten people everywhere so no need to stop shopping one place it's just a part of it and of course we have to be careful but we can't stop shop everywhere.

Totally agree. We actually did not report to the police on the IKEA issue because we went to talk to the head of delivery, and he told us that he will handle it. Ever since we have never heard any news of it. We called the bank for fraud though.

Bout the phone call scam, that was pretty scary, the man claimed that his name is Richard Watson from IRS and he even threatens to arrest in 30 minutes, which means he even knows where we live and where my husband works as he was at work at the time of phone call!

We filed a police report to that, hope they will handle it soon.

In my country it's straight cash for me as I only use my card for withdrawal of cash at the bank and only in emergency which is rarely.

So being here and using a card so much takes a while to get use to. But I'm getting there.

It doesn't help my fear with these criminals out there, who wants you to go to work for your money so they can steal it.

It won't cause me to stop shopping at any place, but for sure to be more careful.

My husband uses only cash, and while living in Egypt all this time, I personally think it's better than constantly using credit/debit cards. I hope that we can continue to pay for  items with cash as we do in his country, but I know it's a bit difficult in the US, as I believe some businesses say 'No Cash'.

Similar to me, I never had the habits of using credit cards in my country. I used cash or debits.

Anyway, update, I finally caught time to pull my husband to the bank of America, closed chase bank because of previous nuisance. I managed to open a checking account of my own finally, however, this is the strange part, I tried to ask about a secured credit card, apparently even after having my husband's joint and authorize cards, and even credit karma shows my score is similar to my husband, it appears that I am still at 0 (its been almost close to 1.5 years since I have the card). I'm confused about this part. I was not able to apply for unsecured cards. The banker did mention that of course if I cash in a good 50k, I'd probably get a credit card. I'm deciding on capital one (cons theres no capital one here where I can personally go to ask questions) or bofa secured right now because bofa is offering with annual fees of 39 dollars. At least now I know that my credit score is not moving lol.

yes which I cannot understand, I do not have credit score. And I have checked with banks today, assured that two of our banks are joint account credit cards not authorized, other one's authorized.

The banker also mentioned that my credit scores will appear "Right" on credit karma once I start with my own card instead of showing my husband's. I actually pull my score from bank.

I'm going to start with Capital One secured, that's my only choice now, the annual fee for Bofa is crazy at 39USD and interest rate is crazy! I believe some of you got instant credit card because of banking in a decent amount of cash when account opening at first arrived, this was told by banker today, they do offer credit cards to those.

So you don't have a credit card in your own name that is linked to the same as your husbands?

I do have a credit card in my own name which my husband's the primary holder, but not vice versa.(me as primary)

But it doesn't count with my husband as credit score. I just made my very own Bank of America recently, so my score actually starts off low again from a secured card. I was quite surprised that his score doesn't count in mine.

I noticed some differences with banks too, Chase bank do not charge any foreign fee if you purchase something online on foreign sites, however, recently i made purchase from aliexpress with my bank of america card and realized that they actually charge a foreign fee for every 1.50 u spend, they charge 0.05. That's actually alot considering if you spend more. I'm not sure if this only applies to my card. I used the cash rewards bank of america card. Had no charges with my Chase Slate.

Hmm that was what I meant that should have given you a score also. Maybe they did something wrong in the company!

But I'm glad you found another way to start given you some credit.

We have mastercard with credit one that we also can use out of country without charges which is really nice. But yeah otherwise it really add up on the fees.
