Nigeria, Christian or Muslim?

I am not very religious and specially I am not very familiar with the religions other than my Catholic.

Can somebody explain to me, what is the difference between Christian and Muslim Nigerians and how to identify what religion do they belong?

How can you tell if a Nigerian person is a Christian or Muslim? Clothes? Behavior? ...

Thank you, Tasha

Just curious why you are asking. Also as with all people there are a range of different ways you may or may not be able to tell. Not all Muslim women wear hijab, some will. Not all Muslim men will wear a kufi/skullcap, some will. The easiest and most surefire way is to ask whomever you are curious about to self identify their religion.

I forgot to add, the difference between Muslim Nigerians and Christian Nigerians is the Muslims practice Islam and the Christians practice Christianity. :)

Can't your man answer you questions?

I guess it depends as said above but also how much the person practice their religion.

Like here in Scandinavian most people are Christians, but basically only a very few attend church. So that way you can't see what religion they have, they don't dress a certain way. It could be the same down there some you can tell right away and others don't come forward with it.

You should ask your man. Most Nigerians/Ghanaians can tell whether it's by Surname, tribe, where they are from (the north for instance) But it's not an all size fits all.

Also google the Muslim faith and see and read for yourself what Muslims beliefs are that's pretty easy.

The Quran and Bible are similar but there are difference as is any faith. Do your research and talk to your man

No question is a dumb question and you don't know what motivated her to ask this question. This is a regional forum and a very appropriate

place to have cultural discussions. Religion definitely comes into play in immigration. Keep scrolling if you find it not relevant.

When it comes to Muslims in sub-Saharan Africa, the first clue is usually by their name. You can tell a Muslim by his or her name. Some are devoted while others aren't.

You might even get confused as to how sometimes some people alternate between being a "good Muslim" and just baring a Muslim name. For instance, I know some Muslims in Ghana when only show commitment to the Islam faith during Ramadan. They do everything like everyone else, secular music, etc.

A devoted African Muslim will definitely performs 5 times prayers.

SO if say, your man has a Muslim name and performs 5 times prayers, then he is a devoted Muslim in African context.

As for the Christians, that's the trickiest part.

Most Africans are assumed to be Christians even the once who attend church services only on 31st December All night service..lol.

In this category too, there are the devoted Christians who will quote Bible verses in every sentence, then you have the self-proclaimed Christians who seldom go to church and the ones who identify as Christians but still believe to traditional African spiritual beliefs.

So to find out if someone is a Christian is just by asking the person.

By the way, don't mistake statements like "Thank God, God Bless you", etc as phrases from Christians. Everyone in Sub-Saharan Africa uses that phrase.

My fiance is a Christian, I did ask much before and I know his church too. I wouldn't mind about him being a Muslim if he was.

My question is about Nigerian culture, I try to learn and research about tribes, religion, cultural behavior and researching, I realized there are many Muslims and my question is mostly about what they wear, how do they behave and how to difference between Christians and Muslims, how to behave myself and do not offend the people around me?

I am asking about religion here, I am also learning about their wedding ceremonies, family values, cooking, I love to cook and here in Dallas we have a very good African store close by, etc.

Thank you to all of you who answered to my topic the way it was posted, general question about religion in Nigeria.

Since you seem to be focused specifically on Muslims and how not to offend people my suggestion would be the same way you would go about not offending the general population. Do not walk around with your female parts exposed, do not wear explicit clothing, and practice good manners. You can behave exactly the same way around a Muslim as you can around a Christian. And as was mentioned previously, as with all religions there is a wide range of levels of devoutness.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I do know how to behave between Christians as I am a Christian myself, maybe that's why it looks I am asking only about Muslims. I do have many friends in Nigeria, don't have a clue what religion they are and I plan to visit Nigeria with my future husband, I was in Ghana several times visiting him. So I am very curious about how the people lives there and what are the preferences.

Learning to cook here too, interesting food, I like it. :dancing:
