How exactly do you know they dont accept NRA. The IRS website doesnt state that you can use NRA, but people on this website have successfully done so for years.

Actually, IRS no longer accepts NRA .

How exactly do you know they dont accept NRA. The IRS website doesnt state that you can use NRA, but people on this website have successfully done so for years.

Of course the IRS says to use NRA. See the current 2015 filing instructions for Form1040. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf Page 14, middle column, last paragraph.

Be sure to enter your spouse's SSN or

ITIN on Form 1040. If your spouse doesn't have

and isn't required to have an SSN or ITIN, enter NRA.

It is also in the 1040A instructions.

The use of NRA is strictly for Married Filing Separately.

For those wishing to file Jointly, the IRS page explaining how to get an ITIN says:

IRS processes returns showing SSNs or ITINs in the blanks where tax forms request SSNs. IRS no longer accepts, and will not process, forms showing "SSA", 205c", "applied for", "NRA",& blanks, etc.

A Married Filing Jointly return will not be processed with anything other than SSN or ITIN.
