Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me. Back in June last year, I took an overdose. I was going through a lot of difficult things. I have never been diagnosed with depression nor have I ever been on meds. I was admitted to hospital for 3 days. Will this affect me being approved? Should I disclose this? Do they have access to my medical records during the medical?

You must disclose. You should be evaluated by your GP and a psychologist or equivalent before medical. Yes this is a big deal. People don't randomly try to kill themselves. :(

Knightsbridge clinic does not have access to you NHS medical files. If they need anything from your record, you would have to ask you doctor to write a short report detailing the hospitalization.

Basically they need to determine that you are no longer a threat to yourself. Which it sounds like you dont think you are so it shouldnt be too big of a deal to get these.

If I get cleared by my gp (which I will) will this jeopardise my chance to being approved? Can they deny me even if I've been cleared?

So would I even need to declare it?

Yes you do need to declare it. Do not lie on any forms ever. Deny? No. Delay? Possibly.

Get your records, talk to your GP and discuss your current health, perhaps if you can go to someone who can evaluate your current mental health status. What Knightsbridge needs to see is a letter statement from a doctor qualified that states you are no longer a danger to yourself or others.

I've spoken to the psychiatrist who signed me off to be discharged, he said he will write me a letter. I'm going to make an appointment tomorrow to see my gp. I want to be honest, I'm just scared that my whole future will be ruined because of one silly mistake :(

It wont ruin it. It may delay it, but since it was over a year ago and if you can get those letters, you may not even do that. I'm glad you're taking it seriously and being proactive. Many people just figure it's not a big deal and they're the ones that end up with issues. :)

Thank you. And thank you all for your help. I really appreciate the encouragement to do what's right. It's the best way to go about it I think. It will all work out if it's meant to be :)

The magic words you want to take in writing to Knightsbridge clinic from a medical doctor will say you "are no longer a threat to yourself or others" or mention you were never a threat to others. Tell your doctors that is the assurance they need to pass you on your visa medical. Just saying you "are fine" or "recovered" isn't enough. Knightsbridge doesn't want to make that call when they don't know you. A doctor who knows you needs to let them know they feel like you will not harm yourself or others in the future.
