Home Sickness

Try to find stores that carry goods from the home country. Sometimes it may involve traveling some distance, but the relief and comfort they get from seeing things from home is well worth the effort. Generally they will be able to speak their home language as well. That has such a calming effect that you will see it on their face.

Of course phone calls home are both good and bad as they miss family but also stay connected. If the family at home is on the internet that helps too.

If you can find people in a similar situation as yourself that helps a little too. You have to be a little careful of those relationships and insure they are happily married couples.

But, mostly it is a matter of time and love and understanding that paves the way to a feeling of happiness and relaxation.

You both need to be patient and understanding about each other.

Eh it will take some getting used to,but we all know what we are ready to do before or during the Visa application.

I myself am pretty sure I will be fine,I think maybe the hardest part will be at the beginning...when that goes by and you find a new job etc then I am sure you will be fine to just settle down and relax.

How will everyone deal with your fiance or fiancee and their home sickness problem while trying to get adjusted to the United States.

KSU1

Keep her busy and buy lots of cheap long distance phone cards! I also wouldn't hurt if she had others she could talk to from her same country that she could converse with in her native language.

BTW I'm also Kent State Alumni! Poli Sci.

best regards,

john

Hey John,

I went to The Ohio State University, my son played football at Kent State for Doug Martin for a couple of years. When your kid is on athletic scholarship it's easy to continue to cheer for the Golden Flashes.

Good Luck with your future Wife.

All of these have helped greatly

Not quite as easy on this one, though there is a K-1 couple (wife from Bogota, married 2003) in our church

Easy, I'll take him to Kissimmee where there seems to be a ton of British tourists, the UK pavillion at Epcot or a British pub around town.

How will everyone deal with your fiance or fiancee and their home sickness problem while trying to get adjusted to the United States.

KSU1

Just relating my own experiences being a K-1 fiancee (wife now!) from Malaysia plus I am Chinese.

Where I am from (the capital of Malaysia) is not that different from where I am staying now, Silicon Valley, CA, with the exception of driving on the other side of the road and shorter buildings. I am a food afficianado and being able to find similar food here helps (I had overcome my sticker shock by now).

However, it was difficult when I couldn't drive and it took me 6 months to find a job (after I have been here for 4 months as I waited for my GC before looking for a job). I had 2 to 3 nervous breakdowns (happened during the time when I was stuck at home without a car). I could call my friends and family via Skype and chat on Yahoo! but the time difference made that difficult and in fact, it made me feel worse as I felt out of touch with my family and friends back every time I talked to them!

My husband was just home a lot. He managed to negotiate for a lighter workload, came home for lunch and was always home by 6pm everyday. We got me a car as soon as I received my GC (EAD never showed up) and that helped a lot. In addition, we went for short trips at least once a month. He was extremely understanding and held me through the worst of it.

The first 6 months was the most difficult but I believe we got over the worse of it, especially since I found a job (will be starting next month!). However, I feel that our marriage is stronger because of what we had been through.

Good luck and I hope that your fiancee will have an easier time than I did!

P/S: My timeline can be found under my husband's userid Miwa.

I'm so excited! I just got home from going grocery shopping here in Orlando. I usually go to a Super Targer that is around the corner, but this time I went to a Publix grocery store. To my surpise, they had a tiny little section of English food that they have imported! They have the marmite, some of the sauces and gravy, they had a ton of cadbury chocolates and some yorkshire pudding mix! Then I realized as I went further down the isle that the entire isle is made up of foods imported for different countries like Spain, India, etc! I guess I will be going to Publix a bit more!

I have set up for my hubby to go to school, join an adult soccer league, Rotary club and he will try to find a job in between all that I have set up for him. He should be able to call his country when he needs to talk a cheap phone card for 10 cents a minute yippee and we have instant messaging. I keep in contact with all my friends via internet all the time. We are now on the same time zone so that helps. We can drive to Chicago to find Jamaican food stores. Also I have found a store online that ships food. I am preparing our house with pictures of his friends and family. Making it feel like he lives here before he even gets here. We will work on his car once he can get a job. I can't afford 2 cars on my income alone. I believe keeping them busy and so they can meet new people with similar interest. He loves my parents so we live close to them and have Sunday dinner with everyone every two weeks.

I just got off the phone with a friend who did a K1 for her husband 2 years ago. We talked about my fellow coming, and she said ooh boy, it won't be easy.

He'll take language classes, hopefully I can convince him to volunteer, and I'm hoping to get him on a soccer team (luckily they play right next to the dog park where I take my other baby). It's not going to be easy, but I'm hoping that he'll be open to taking public transport so he's no completely dependent upon me while he's not working. And my father is retired and he wants to take Edgar fishing, although I'm interested in seeing what he thinks of the catch and release concept.

But I'm most worried that for all I try to do, he'll just be depressed anyway. My friend said that her husband just slept most of the time. For a year.
