How to divorce when spouse in Russia? (split)

Dear Forum Participants,

I'm in the same situation as the creator of this forum once was - I married my wife in the U.S., she has since relocated back to Moscow, and I currently need to serve her divorce papers.

My questions:

1. Can this be done via mail? Can I send her the papers with a confirmation of receipt, and then use this receipt back in the U.S.?

2. If #1 is not a viable option, what's my best course of action to a receipt that she has been served with divorce docs?

We are on amicable terms, so she is willing to cooperate to make it easier.

I hope that someone here can advise you; probably most of the divorced Am/Russ couples have left VisaJourney, as have the earlier participants in this old thread.

Many attorneys will provide a free initial consultation, so you might poke around in the meantime to see if an attorney has any insights. Pretty much any Maryland divorce attorney can comment on what it would take from "your" side. You might also contact the U.S. Citizen Service department of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and tell them that they're your hope for authoritative advice.
