Once you get your green card, you can get another SS card without the notice.

Correct, and once you have a green card, you no longer need employment authorization.

You can(and I personally believe should) update your status with the SSA when you become a permanent resident. Many people have no clue about immigration statuses, and having a card without the stipulation on it can avoid hassles. Hurts nothing to go change it. It is free after all.

From recent experience - just a word for the wise that it is advisable to proceed to the SS office no more than a week after arrival on a K1 visa. Unlike years ago the I-94 is now computerized, print out your copy, passport in hand and off you go and apply for the social security number. Although not able to work there are other benefits available immediately such as being added to your spouse bank accounts, credit cards, medical coverage and anything else requiring a social security number.

I got my SS card by showing my passport and K1 VISA, the Visa and therefore the I-94 have to be valid to get the SS card and both run out at the end of the 90 days.

Also my SS card had an endorsement through the middle stating ' not allowed to work without DHS authorization' but at least i got a SS card

A K1 visa holder is not allowed to work without EAD or Green Card.

I got mine same as yours but last thursday we went to ss to change my name to married name with my green card and the immigration system has not change my name yet... It takes a while... I agree with you that you cannot work with k1 visa unless you have ead and considering that that i90 and k1 expired he has to wait for his greencard...

Yes I wasn't expecting that out of the blue, mind you for my K1 I waited in the backlog of Texas last year for 183 days, whilst those that went through the California centre took 12-14 days, so you just cant tell really, my AOS approval took 20 days after my biometrics appointment. it was unbelievable!

If you don't mind me asking I'm now going through the k1 process with my fiancé our interview is coming up next month I plan on going in with him . Any heads up or advice ? Any information is useful and how was it at Poe? I'd really like to be with him when he enters to help ask or clarify any questions . How long with your interview and did your spouse attend with you ? I read that if I go it will be shorter idk ?

Hey all, I've read the thread and I admit I'm now very confused.

Is it advisable to go get my fiance's SSN as soon as he arrives (he's coming on a K1 visa)?

Even when someone said it takes 90 days to get the number....

I understand it expires when his visa expires. I also understand about the AOS application and the rest.

The new thing for me is getting the SSN when my fiancé gets here - even before we marry.

Thanks for clarifying!

Yes, he should get it asap.

SSN does not expire and it does not take 90 days to get.

I think you are confusing SSN with work permission. They are not the same thing.

AOS for my husband
