Yes Certified and original...Do not send them copy, although copy might work out but most the time they send RFE. You can order two certified original copies and send them one.

Really, most of the time? Please provide evidence to back this up.

The form instructions ask for a copy of the marriage certificate. That is all that is required and needed. I have not seen RFEs for people sending a copy like the instructions ask for, so I will be interested in seeing all these RFE posts from the 'most of the time' people.

OP> You need a copy of the marriage certificate you receive from the court once your marriage has been registered.

The OP is filing for AOS. They are not dealing with the NVC. The USCIS requires that a translation be provided if it is not in English. However, since they came on a K-1 and married in the US, it is in English and does not require a translation.

Forgetting to Bring Original Documents to Support the Application

When you filed your application for adjustment, you should have submitted lots of documentation to USCIS -- in the form of copies. Applicants often forget that copies are not solid proof of anything; they can be forged or tampered with. USCIS wants the chance to inspect your originals, at your interview. Unless you remember to bring your original passport, birth certificate, marriage and divorce certificates (as applicable), and any criminal records, the USCIS officer not be able to approve your case that day.

So no? You do not have links to all these RFEs you say happen? That is what I thought.

Your partial copy and paste in giant font from the Nolo website is not even on topic. Taking originals to an interview is exactly what you are supposed to do. That was never in dispute. You send in copies with your submission and then you take originals to the interview.

You told the OP not to send in copies, that they had to send in originals with their I-485 because most people that send in copies get an RFE. I asked for links to these RFEs you say people get for sending copies. I do not think they exist.

Copies are what the USCIS asks for. They rarely give RFEs for sending what the instructions ask for, which is a copy of the marriage certificate.

be filed with an application, a legible photocopy may be

submitted. Original documents submitted when not required

may remain a part of the record, and will not be automatically

returned to you.

citizen and subsequent marriage to that citizen

Attach a copy of the fiancé(e) petition approval

Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Document.

And here is more about it from the USCIS > https://www.uscis.gov/forms/forms-and-fees/general-tips-assembling-applications-mailing

USCIS no longer routinely requires submission of original documents or "certified copies." Instead, ordinary legible photocopies of such documents (including naturalization certificates and alien registration cards) will be acceptable for initial filing and approval of petitions and applications.

You are absolutely correct. My information came from other links or readings and I came across one that stated that and definitely was not USCIS website. So I stand corrected and thank you for sharing valuable information with us. This is a learning experience for me just as it was for you. Next time I will be sure information shared to others is coming directly from USCIS. Thanks!
