Immigration officers visited our house. N-400

my n-400 interview was rescheduled from 2/01/2016 because they said they didn't have my file on hand so I was told I will receive another appointment within couple of weeks, but it didn't happen so I scheduled an info pass appointment two weeks ago but they said all I can do now is wait, however last Friday morning two immigration officers came to our house, I let them in and they started asking questions about us, how did we meet, where do we work now, etc. they were very friendly, we never had any issues with the processing time until this point, it seems like it's taking them forever to schedule an interview, by the way our relationship is legit and we don't have any red flags that we are aware of.

did any of you guys experience something like this ? and what do you guys think we should do at this point? any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you guys!

As far as I see, home visit are very rare. Probably because it requires too many man hours and costly. But I thought most of these in house visits happen at the AOS stage, before they warrant the green card. Once you are a permanent resident, you were not required to apply for naturalization. You could have lived like that till the end of your life. Not sure why do it for a naturalization application but given you've been waiting for a long while for rescheduling your interview, have you thought about getting congressional assistance? Tell your congressperson you've been waiting for the interview notice since 2/1 and this unexpected home visit made you and your family really uncomfortable.

They're fully entitled to visit your home since you're seeking an immigration benefit, and you're fully entitled to refuse them entry if you wish. That being said, it probably wouldn't be a very good idea in the furtherance of your N-400.

I'm not really a subscriber to "if you've got nothing to hide then consent to everything the government wants from you", but in this circumstance - if your relationship is genuine - I don't think there is harm in letting them into your house, letting them see your (literal) dirty laundry, cereal boxes, multiple copies of the Kama Sutra (always be sure to offer a practical demonstration), and so on. Maybe they received a tip that your relationship is not bona fide (unlikely - unless you've royally pissed someone off who's gone telling tales to ICE/USCIS); maybe it's a random check with your application pulled out of a pile by a guy with his eyes closed (more likely). Who knows; they certainly won't tell you.

Seeking some congressional assistance, as suggested above, would probably be a good move to make.

thank you guys for the answers, I found it very strange for them to come visit at this stage, I would've understood if they did that when we removed the conditions but everything went smooth until now! it's soo frustrating ugh! do you guys think it would be a good idea to contact our congress man at this point, or should we give it some time? and do you guys think when I get rescheduled for another interview it will show it online or will I just receive a notice in the mail?

thank you!

My friend got a visit from friendly-seeming immigration officers when he was applying for his green card. They invited him to accompany them to the office, so they could get everything sorted out. He ended up in jail. So we're kind of against visits from immigration!

I'm glad yours seemed to go smoothly. Did they tell you why they were there? It does seem odd!

On J visas.  Spouse won DV lottery while in US.  Did AOS from the US.

Boston field office, GC holder for 10 years.

Citizenship received in 2016, took ~5 months from application to passport.

Spouse received citizenship in 2019

Congressional inquiries are very common. Some senators/house representatives even have special immigration related links on their websites with form templates that you can fill out quickly. USCIS takes congressional inquiries very seriously and need to respond within 48 hours with an answer and usually they can't get away with simply saying "we are currently working on the case", they would need to give some details why they haven't rescheduled your interview yet.

The most surprising part about this visit is that they did so during the time N400 is pending. these applications usually goes the smoothest of all the other immigration petitions/applications since by this time an applicant had already been tried and tested. wow, very surprising . what is your nationality btw ? not that it matters now.

Not sure what your friend ending up in jail has to do with this thread. Ever think immigration was sent to his door because he did something wrong? Obviously it's the case with him because he ended up in jail.

OP:Immigration makes home visits when they feel the need to do further background checks .Obviously you had nothing to hide and hopefully things will turn out just fine.

That's surprising to me, too. I knew they do home visits during AOS or ROC, but not during natz. As someone stated above, you can live your entire life as an LPR, married or not, after passing ROC. Surprising they still wanted to see your relationship exists, although I assume you're applying after 3 years based on that relationship.

Do you live in a major metropolitan area? Curious if there's an immigration office nearby or if they had to make an effort to come to you.

Good to hear your interview is scheduled. Just be truthful with them, and everything should go well!
