Jack, thank you for the information.

Twelve months?!?!?! Jesus! An Immigration attorney told me about 6, and 9 as a maximum. Did you go through consular processing also, or did you file your I-485 concurrently?

I m not sure what you mean with consular processing? If you mean DCF (direct consular filing - filing the I-130 petition at a USCIS office in your and the petitioners country of residence abroad, that case the UK) then your lawyer was right with 6 months. But your spouse would have had to live in the UK too so I assume you go through the normal CR-/IR-1 process through the lockboxes which should be taking about a year.

Also don't think the SSN expedites the process. I assume they ask about it to be able to link you to previous stays and immigration processes in the US. All forms of identification helps them I guess. I have a TIN and a US military ID (I am the benificary) and it doesn't help one bit.

Direct Consular Filing - Frankfurt

03/14/2016 I-130 Sent

03/15/2016 Check cashed

03/16/2016 I-130 NOA1

04/19/2016 I-130 NOA2 (took two! weeks in the mail)

05/17/2016 Got Case# after emailing the Frankfurt Consulate

Continued application in 2022…

Hello Mate, I won't use your name on here but we know each other from Fado in Annapolis. I went back and forth loads of times when I had my fiancée visa in, just using an ESTA. No problems at immigration in the US. Just have return flight booked and make sure you're on it. They used to stamp me in for 3 months at a time.

Thank you mate. I'm just coming back for 12 days in May, and I'm still a serving member of the British military - I think that alone will provide sufficient evidence that I will be returning.

You'd think so wouldn't you? But I've seen a serving Gurkha denied even though he definitely had to be back as he was only looking for a short holiday before his Op Herrick tour. Slightly different situation as he wasn't a UK Citizen but the principle is the same, don't put too much reliance on your military status.

Having to be back for duty is a plus but only along with everything else that everyone needs, return tickets and proof of ties to the UK.

About a year is as good a guess as any, adjusting in country would have been a better option but too late now.

Might be a delay due to your military history, more to check.

Why on earth would I go AWOL and foresake my pension of 24 years' service? I'm not that desperate!

Anyway, thank you all for providing your experience to me, although I must say that I'm hearing nothing but negativity - is the process really that bad?

Long winded, not that bad.

Because people have been known to give up everything for their 'American Dream'!

And there's no negativity, just advice to be prepared.

The system will show if you have an immigration petition in the works when you pass through passport control.

They may or may not ask for proof that you'll return home after your trip.

Some people visit many times during the process and never get more than a 'How long will you be staying in the USA? Enjoy your stay'.

Others get asked for proof of ties to their home country.

It's just a case of remembering your 7 P's.
