Hi all, this looks like a great community and I'm sure I'll have many questions sooner than later.

I'm Mike and I'm a New Zealand citizen married to a US Citizen (She's also now a citizen of New Zealand). We want to move back to the US, as she's been away from home for 10 years and it's more than long enough. We're applying for a K-3 visa.

I don't have much to add right now, but I hope to chat with a few of you over the next few months as our application proceeds.

Can I ask why you feel you need the K3? The CR-1 visa is the one most spouses get, and often the K3 isn't even an option as that path gets closed at NVC stage.

Good Point, I've been looking at file numbers so long! It is the IR-1 (or CR-1?) we're applying for. I'll go up and edit that in my original post!

Cr-1 for if you are married less than 2 years, IR one if married longer

Thanks. My wife knows this stuff, so we're not completely flying blind! I've joined the community to learn what I can as we move through the process.

One thing I'm going to have to figure out the implications of owning a company in New Zealand while simultaneously starting a new LLC in the US.

Hey Mike, I'm a fellow kiwi who just filed last month. :-) I've added you as a friend to keep in touch, and once you get your NOA1 (receipt that they've got your file and which service centre) make sure to add and link a timeline ... I'll follow your timeline too, plus it contributes to the data for estimates. We are in a similar situation, hubby has been in australia with me for 6 years and has had long enough away from home/is over Australia. We're heading back to NZ in June though and awaiting my greencard from there.

Has the US citizen spouse been filing US tax returns? What steps are you taking to establish US domicile? Those 2 items can trip up expats returning to the US.

Thanks for your help. She has been filing tax returns in the US. We are looking at what we need to do to establish US domicile. We intend to stay with family while looking for our own place, but after reading the link you posted, we may have to come up with a solid plan to establish domicile.

I'm actually in Aussie right now but will be in Hamilton come end of June until the visa is approved. Or floating between Hamilton and Auckland
