F1 or F2A?

I'm asking for my friend.

Here's her story,

Her dad was petition by her aunt to immigrate to the US. Visa got approved and now they, Dad, Mom and my friend are in the US since Dec 2013. They left their 23 year old unmarried son in the Philippines because he is no longer a derivative. So, when the dad got here, he immediately petitioned the son, though he is still LPR.

Since it is almost that time to save money for the naturalization process, it is still 2 years but they are starting to save up for the naturalization fee for 3 of them, anyways, she asked me if it's better to apply for n-400 and update the visa to be F1 or stick to being LPR and the son under F2A until the petition gets approved then the dad applies for n400.

I looked in the visa bulletin and this is what i got. So, if the visa is still not approved by 2018, is it better/faster to become a USC and update the visa process or stay LPR and wait it out?

No one can predict what it will look like three years from now. Best to check it at that time. No need to delay becoming a USC, if it is a shorter wait time for an LPR they can simply opt out of upgrading the petition.

you are looking at the wrong category, F2A is for children under 21, so check F2B for unmarried children over 21 of a LPR

for f2B, they are in 2005, for F1, 2004, she can decide to remain in the F2B category or change to F1

That's what we are wondering about, if it's faster to be an F1, thus the dad will apply for naturalization Oct 2018 and change the petition to F1 or stay in the F2B requiring the dad to delay the naturalization process..

I reallydon't understand the cut off date thing in the website, the F1 says its the cut off is 01JUL04; the F2B IS 01APR05.

what do those meam, the dad just petitioned the son january 2014. Does that mean the wait is 11 years??

yes, both have waiting time over 10 years, if she stays in the F2B category, the wait is over 11 years, if she changes category, the wait is over 12 years

I really thought that if one's related to a USC the wait is not that long.. i am very wrong..

Since the son is over 21, the waiting time is really at least 10 years even if the petitioner is a naturalized USC.

It will be longer if the son got married while waiting.
