Yeah it'll be that way all places but still don't believe it's the cheapest choice for all shopping when they don't have that much money. (And only are them or even them + 2 kids)

It is. Target and Walmart are usually about 25-75% of the cost of other options for us.

My husband has done much exprimenting of yogurt to mix with granola. He just drinks the kefir, so that wouldn't do, but has found one dairy in Fargo that makes yogurt under a generic label that he'll get and can only be bought at the tiny store near us. Nothing else will do.

We love Brown Cow cream top. A suggestion is to find a yogurt whose taste you like and use that for a starter for making your own yogurt made with whole fat milk

I thought I was the only one being picky, it does taste weird and different! I tried Whole foods market, the yogurt tastes weird too. Theres a weird strong taste in the yogurt here.

The milk is kinda different too, more diluted.

Apple juices are extremely sweet!

well I've started my journey to find good yogurt. We went to Kroger yesterday and I bought three different things:

  • a bottle of Lifeway's kefir : bad. it has the same aftertaste of things with no real sugar.
  • a pot of noose: it was meh. It was the white kind of yogurt with some fruity sauce to mix with. The yogurt was ok, but I am generally not a fan of the fruity sauces with yogurt.
  • cup Liberté vanilla yogurt: delicious!! no trace of weird aftertastes, it was relatively thick without being greek and the packaging didn't say anything about lowfat or sweetened and while it doesn't taste exactly like my homecountry's yogurt, I can definitely see myself eating that kind form now on with my cereal. I didn't see any bigger formats though, just the small cup, so that sucks.

About the milk, I don't drink, but I know they are all low fat, which at least in Chile, makes it always diluted like white looking water. If there's some whole-milk, I wouldn't know where to find it here.

Whole milk is available everywhere. It is with all the milk. It may say "Vitamin D" milk and is usually in a container with a red cap or red accents.

Yes they may have less variety of fruits and veggies but I always found each place lacks something.

So I do see how ppl would do all their shopping in one spot. It wouldn't work for my family though and we are lucky we have a number of stores in close range of each other.

Just the two of them probably makes it easier to shop there. One stop and they are done.

I wish I had a Trader Joe's I keep hearing about them.

Whole foods around here is not where you go to save money. Way over priced and they really don't carry much.

Yeah we have some stores to choose from, but it's true that for the two of us it is easier to find everything in one place. Walmart is good because we mostly go with the cheapest brand of any product we are looking for. Yesterday we went to kroger anyway and we were fascinated by some of the stuff we found, but most of them were a little more expensive. We will probably go there every now and then anyway, because we found some things we didn't find in walmart (like a brand of yogurt that actually tastes good), but probably will stick to walmart for the bulk of our groceries.

wholefoods we haven't been there together yet, but I've heard a lot that that's the place you go when you don't worry about money. And trader joe's, my husband had never heard of before and when we looked it up we didn't find it in our area, so I guess we'll never know how good it seems to be.

My husband is from Turkey and we thankfully live near a large Turkish community. He loves Turkish yoghurts and cheeses a lot and we always buy Turkish brands from Turkish markets. I have given up trying to get him to eat the American stuff haha.

When I lived in germany I was desperate to find something we had in Chile but germany didn't have. It translates to "condensed milk" and it was from Nestle. I was happy when I went to a big supermarket and found that they imported the Nestle condensed milk from turkey! that leads me to believe that maybe I'd like some dairy products more in Turkey probably than germany or now america :P

The "Greek Yogurt" they have here is just drained yogurt. That makes it thicker. You can get that and add a little milk to it. Also you can make yogurt yourself with a yogurt-maker, if you can find one.

We shop at Kroger for most 'staple' items like flour, eggs, meats, and sign up for their card and they'll send you good coupons every couple of months.

I will go to Trader Joe's for things like cheeses veggies. The vegetables are less expensive there, too, many times; just stay away from the pre-packaged or pre-made frozen things; those are really expensive, and that's where I think they make their money (TJ's).

Walmart preys on people that don't make much money and I try hard not to ever shop there. Their employees are really taken advantage of, too, and not paid well; considering the huge amount of profit they make, it makes me mad, so I stay away.

We are exploring our options now too. We started at kroger and I don't think we have Trader Joe's, but we will keep on the lookout for other good places to buy. We compared the prices of kroger and walmart and at least with the stuff we got, walmart was cheaper, but we'll definitely come back to kroger for some specific things we found only there.

You should go to Aldi then:

There are plenty of Aldi stores in texas

Evaporated and condensed milk are not quite the same though.

Yep, but that's what we got. Condensed milk here is sweetened as far as I know. Plus she said that the thing she likes can be translated as condensed milk, which might mean evaporated milk.

Yup, but it's a whole lotta sugar of a difference (40-45% according to that article) :). Incidentally, the only reason I know the difference is because we had a whole big discussion about it on a translation forum I frequent (I cook, but I've never used either... desserts are my weakest point) :)

I'm confused then :( which one is condensed milk? (can't open the link you sent above just yet). The one I mean is very heavy, yellowish and VERY sweet (that's why germans didn't really know it or like it!) .
