Hello everyone!

Question for you...

I live in the states with a cr1 visa. On the passport it says that the visa "upon endorsement serves as a temporary I 551 evidencing permanent residence for one year". I will have my actual green card in a month or so. At the moment am I a resident in the states or do I need to wait for the day that I have the green card in my hand to say that?

Thank you!!

My husbands passport has the same thing, and his Visa expires in August. Can someone explain why it expires? Is he able to leave the US and come back after that expiration date?

The expiration date of the visa is simply the last day on which he can use the visa to enter the US. The immigrant visa is a single-use visa and became invalid upon using it to enter the US anyway. Whatever expiration date it had is completely irrelevant now. The immigrant visa automatically turned into an I-551 (green card) valid for one year from the date of entry (this has nothing to do with the expiration date of the "visa"). As a US permanent resident with an I-551 for proof of permanent residency, he can travel in and out of the US freely.
