Fiancé finally has Visa in hand today and POE will be October 7

Congrats! My fiancee received hers in hand today too. :)

Haven't visited this topic in awhile, but here's some interesting info about ours, just for posterity's sake:

She had her interview on Sept 7th and everything went well with friendly discussion. However, they had questions about one of her past employments, as well as her current employer, so she was given the dreaded 221g and asked her to email them her resume. They took her passport anyway, so we weren't too worried. After doing all of the research, we think it might be related to the MANTIS check for the Technology Alert List (TAL). We had to wait 3 weeks in Admin Processing, which forced us to change flight and wedding dates. The CEAC date didn't update until this past Monday and then things started rolling:

9/26 - Status Date updated

9/27 - case changed from Immigrant Visa to Non-Immigrant Visa and Case Creation Date updated (means they were processing visa)

9/28 - Issued

9/29 - Visa in-hand

So, not too bad. We're glad it's almost over. And POE will be Oct 11th, wedding Oct 17th.

Congrats to all the people receiving their visas and getting married already!

Hi guys!

Congrats cricketman and everybody for approvals, POEs and weddings!

I went to get my SSN today. I waited until after the wedding because if you do it before then you'll have to go again after to change your name, in case you're legally changing it after the wedding. This will only work if you have your marriage certificate in hand more than 30 days before the I-94 expires. From what I read you should't wait longer than that if you wanna get a SSN with the I-94. My marriage certificate took two weeks before I could pick it up.

I was asked the same things that bigant already told us: passport, original birth certificate and I-94. They told me it should take about two weeks until I get the card in the mail.

Hope this helps, let us know the updates. :D

I did houston a few weeks ago. I flew on a weekday so I was in and out in about 15mins. They didn't really ask me anything in the room, they were mostly chatting amongst themselves. First CO did ask what's the purpose of my visit (rolls eyes) and whether I was ready to get married. But I think he was just being a grampa lol

So no worries! All will be well, make sure she has the package and her passport close by, its all you need.

Good luck to you guys!

Guys we went to City Hall in Philadelphia for our marriage license and we were disappointed that the lade asked for my fiance's SS# @.@

He came by K1 visa.

POE 10/1

SSN 10/4 this needs 2 weeks for the card to arrive home.

Is this true to have ssn ready before obtaining marriage license?

You would want to check with your county. Usually they have a website that will have all the required information. It's hard for me to believe that is accurate though, I think they gave you wrong info :( for my county, you do need your ssn IF you are a citizen, if not, you provide other documentation. Good Luck!

While we are on the subject, If anyone is still reading this forum haha, I have read that you should wait about 2 weeks before going to the social security office but then I have seen some people that went right after POE. I was wondering if anyone in our group has experience with this? Is it quicker now that the I-94 is electronic? Thank you!!!

Somebody at City Hall needs a training refresher course, SSN is not required for marriage license. However, you are actually better off getting the SSN card before getting married then as soon as you get the SSN card file for a Employment Authorization Document(EAD) so your fiance can start working soon, after you file for the EAD then get married, after married go back to Social Security office and request a new updated SSN card with her married name. If you wait till after you are married to apply for the EAD I heard it takes several months to get the EAD, but if you apply for the EAD before you get married I heard you will receive the EAD in only a few weeks. If you are running out of time on your 90 days, then you might want to just find someone at City Hall who knows what they are doing then get married.

Hey buddy,

Can u clear these doubts in your comment off for me.

1. What u mean EAD is the employment authorization documents we apply with AOS or apply it separatedly before AOS?

2. "Get married" means Get married license or a wedding ceremony?

Sorry if I get you wrong.

I already apply SSN for my fiance. Card will arrive in one or two week.

Yesterday we dropped off the city hall for the marriage license but they refused and asked for his SS#. Spechless.

But we will go back tomorrow morning and ask for supervisor if she still gives the wrong info.

This is the url of how we obtain the marriage license (ML) in Philly

http://secureprod.phila.gov/wills/marriagelicense.aspx

After getting ML, we are good to send AOS package and hope EAD can arrive soon.

Thanks.
