Other key findings of the report include:

Japanese men and women had the lowest BMI in the high-income world.

American men and women had the highest BMI of any high-income country.

The lowest BMIs in Europe were among Swiss women and Bosnian men.

Timor-Leste, Ethiopia, and Eritrea have the lowest average BMI in the world.

The country with the highest average BMI was American Samoa (average BMI of 35 kg/m2 for women and 32 kg/m2 for men), where the average individual is classed as obese.

Morbid obesity, where a persons weight interferes with basic physical functions such as breathing and walking, now affects around 1 per cent of men in the world, and 2 per cent of women. In total, 55 million adults are morbidly obese.

Women in Singapore, Japan, and a few European countries including Czech Republic, Belgium, France, and Switzerland had virtually no increase in average BMI over the 40 years.

Why America bmi so high? Bad food I suppose?

Portion size plays a factor I think. I have noticed a big increase in the size of servings in the UK over the past decade. Also education. Over here the kids get a monthly menu showing what they will be served for lunch-it is broken down into various food groups and the amount of calories per meal is indicated. Also exercise...

You know Mrs. Obama tried to introduce healthy meals in schools and people were ticked. What are your thoughts? I thought it was a great idea. Especially for poorer areas because there is a correlation with poorness and poor health

Jamie Oliver tried the same thing in the UK-some parents were outraged and claimed it was their right to have their kids eat fish and chips with baked beans for lunch...

Peeps here tend to not to want to put on weight-several years ago there was a big panic about "metabolic syndrome "- what westerners would call middle age girth-lol!! Lots of fat-reducing teas were brought onto the market to battle this "syndrome"! There was also a boom in Zero Calorie foods in the convenience store-lol.

The content available on a site dedicated to bringing folks to America should not be promoting racial discord, euro-supremacy, discrimination based on religion , exclusion of groups from immigration based on where they were born, disenfranchisement of voters rights based on how they might vote.

So back to people wanting the right to be unhealthy and kill their kids early too...., yes?

I wish that they would use something other than bmi to determine health/obesity. My bmi is in the overweight range because of muscle that I've put on by working out. I had a baby 8 months ago and naturally some of the weight is stil coming off. However the muscle that I've added will likely keep me in the overweight portion of bmi. I'm healthy, my doctor isn't concerned about me. That's the most important thing:

BMI is a screening tool. It does not diagnose. This is a common but massively overblown criticism of BMI. Most people don't have enough appreciable muscle beyond the median for it to be relevant, and although body fat percentage is more accurate, BMI is a perfectly decent measure for most. With few exceptions if your BMI says you're overweight, you are. No excuses. But, many people are blind to the fact they are overweight: http://news.discovery.com/human/psychology/most-americans-are-overweight-but-dont-know-it-140617.htm We've all heard it, too; a person who's obviously 50-60 pounds overweight thinks they only need to lose 20 lbs.

Moreover, total adiposity is not the only problem. If you throw 100 pounds of muscle on a lean individual that still represents extra load on the cardiovascular system and other organs.

My doctor disagrees with you heavily, so did my former one in Canada. I originally wanted to lose 40lbs which would put me in a healthy bmi range, but I was told that there was really no need and it could actually be a detriment to my health. He seems to be happy with my weight so why shouldn't I be?

Your doctors are right, I think.
