The State Department has apologized for posting a tweet directed at ugly Americans.

It followed a series of tweets from the government agency with travel advice for students going on their Spring Break.

But on Wednesday it sparked outrage by warning followers to remember how attractive or ugly they are - and whether a stranger may only be approaching them to take advantage.

'Not a 10 in the US? Then not a 10 overseas. Beware of being lured into buying expensive drinks or worse - being robbed #springbreakingbadly,' it said.

The tweet, an apparent attempt to be edgy, flopped, and thousands of people hit back with anger and sarcasm.

'Tweet was offensive, period,' one user said as the State Department tried to apologize for the unsuccessful message.

One user tweeted: '[THE STATE DEPARTMENT SPOTS YOU DRUNK AT THE CLUB] "your American accent isn't mysterious OR sexy. god, I'm calling you an Uber"'

Another said: 'New foreign friend says he wants to date you? Beware, he could be a murderer. Or worse, a 5.'

Eventually, a parody account for @TravelGov, called @Travel_Gov, began sending out spoof messages.

I don't know. VJ has taught me that this is actually an important PSA that needs to be said. Is this a problem of shoot the messenger? No one wants the straight dope from the State Dept?

1. So, somebody really reads tweets from the State department?

2. Is it really important for the State Department to be "edgy"?

It's sad they want to tell people who views a person as a 10 or not. What one person deem fugly can be seen as a 10 by another.

They should have tweeted warning signs to look for in the new spring fling

Indeed. In fact I found that I got more attention in the USA than in Canada when I was single, men seemed to be more accepting of a thicker figure and a bit more meat. Canadian men I mostly found very driven by thin and athletic females.

But it was a stupid tweet too

I've said it more than once on here, I've always been attracted to older men. A 10 year and up gap is good. Marv made 9 and some change so I gave him a pass. Lol

In one of the Facebook VJ groups, there is a woman posting who says that older woman/younger man relationships where the woman is 30+ years older is a new trend that many are adopting.

Edit to add: then she started posting pics of herself to show how foxy she still looks at 60-something, and that she was deffo hotter than the 30something woman who was debating her about this "trend."

The US is full of unsuspecting men who fall victim to the CABA female every day. The lure of Uggs, Juicy's & Cheetos is hard for American men to resist.

Well hubs does love Cheetos. And I wear lululemon thank you very much ;)
