I became aware of it when Avril Lavigne did 'Hello Kitty'. That became a bit of a firestorm in the US, though I don't think it was a big deal in Japan. Maybe Jacque knows.

It won't play at my office - I went to a funeral in SLC last week and came back to find I was the only person left in an area that 100 people were working the week before (it was a bizarre experience, crews were already tearing the offices down) I'm now working at a nearby data center with a different set of internet rules - maybe they have an anti-swift filter in place. I can play other youtube videos but this one never gets past the ads.

I do remember this video had complaints about cultural appropriation - at the time I called BS because twerking was a Latin thing but then I was corrected that it in fact had it's origins in South Africa - though I still hold that the skank-twerking was originally done by Latin Americans.

Not a big deal, at all, here.

African Americans, Asians , whoever wanted to don a polo shirt or a house dress and make a roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, I could care less. Ok so it may not be exactly the same thing but I'm thinking of "white things".

As for the dreads fight: it's just hair! Justin timber lake and Gwen stefani wore cornrows in the 90/00's and nobody seemed to care. Why jump on Bieber?

I think I kind of get it , however it appears to have gone to extremes in the US...

I think the problem lies in when someone tries to present themselves as belonging to a different culture than the one they belong to through fashion, and then hope to be accepted by that other culture. It is a dishonest quick step, and draws criticism from the other/ alien culture

I thought the kid in the OP video looked good with the dreads, the two women going at him seemed like bullies enjoying someone else's discomfort and should not be in a position of power.

Bo Derek looked hot doing them back in the 80's - Beiber I don't think looks good - he should get rid of them purely for fashion reasons.
