Another update:

After checking the visa status via CEAC for the B2 I applied for on the 24th of March 2016, it still says "No Status". As far as I'm aware this is still the limbo state that does not require me to say on future visa/ESTA applications that I have been denied a visa in the past. I am not sure if this status will lapse to "Denied" at any point, but I would have thought it would have done so by now.
