While in Canada see if you can expedite the passport for cheaper than filing from the USA.

My wife did this last year while we were in Windsor for a week. It cost an extra $60 to expedite but she had her new passport in 2 days.

Thanks for the info!

I did apply via mail. I gathered all the stuff I needed when I was in Canada and mailed it certified mail when I got back to the USA

Meh...my MIL had passed away suddenly. I had to show proof of travel and my references had to be contactable immediately.

yeah i had a flight and i got mine in an hour! same thing.. if you have a flight itinerary and show them and go earlyyy so you are first in line, they will do it in an hour but u need to make sure your references are around!

I spoke to an officer while in line (down the hall!) he pulled me out and gave me priority. It was awesome

I've done it in the past before by mail. I can't recall how I did it though. Last time I renewed, I actually just was visiting in Canada and just got it done there and had it mailed to me which took a month or so I think or I sent it to my parents and they mailed it to me.

This summer I'll actually be back up in Canada for a week so I figure I'll just get the photos done up there as I did last time and then submit the passport and application right there and have them mail me the new passport to my home down here if they can do that...

i need to get my new passport asap but i am in the USA.. if i fill the applicaiton and mail it in how long will it take to get back to me?? Or i am considering mailing it to my parents and have them mail it in and use my canadian address as the mailing address..(then having them mail it back to me) i would save 100$ but im not sure if that is worth it.. but would that be faster??? I am looking to travel in 4-6 weeks!

You can contact your local consulate for emergency passport services.

OP how long did it end up taking? I am in the same boat wanting to travel back to Canada soon but don't want to book the flight just in case I don't get it back in time! TIA

It was surprisingly quick for me. I mailed it to Canada April 1st and received it in DC in mid-April. I don't know if there are peak times though where it takes longer. I'd say if you book your flight out at least 2 months in advance, you'll be fine, providing that your application is complete and they won't send it back to you.

October 9, 2014 – NOA 1
March 25, 2015 – NOA 2 – Approved!

NVC STAGE (5 months, 28 days, including transit time):

September 7, 2017 - VSC cashed check

September 11, 2017 - Received NOA (receipt date of Aug 31)

September 23, 2017 - I-797C Received (receipt date of Sept 15)

October 6, 2017 - Biometrics Appointment

August 13, 2018 - I-797 Received (receipt date of August 6) extending status for 18 months

Yikes I was hoping to book for a flight October 22nd. I am sure my app is complete and the pic was done professionally....did you send it express? Thanks for answering so quick by the way!

I sent it via Fedex and I can't remember which type of service. It might have been express because it arrived the day later. It was the cheapest air delivery option they have. Did you check the Passport Canada website to see how long they're currently taking to process passports for US residents?
