Canada K-1's A MAJOR CHANGE!!!!!

"Starting April 1, 2016, the U.S. Consulate General in Vancouver will no longer process K-1 visas, also known as fiancé(e) visas. The U.S. Consulate General in Montreal will be the interviewing site for all K visas in Canada. This change will allow Mission Canada to more efficiently schedule and adjudicate K visa applications. .

The U.S. Consulate General in Montreal currently provides all immigrant visa services in Canada. The application process for K visas is the same as for an immigrant visa. While we recognize that having to travel to Montreal will be an inconvenience for applicants, processing all immigrant visas including the K fiancé(e) visas at the same post will help ensure transparency, consistency, and uniform customer service for all applicants."

Ok I looked at it and understand better now. One thing they are stating is that now after the NVC send our files to the embassy, they will contact us with instructions to set the date of our interview. Does it mean that the process after they receive our files will change meaning that we will have to book our interview before sending the DS160...I am also worried that it will take even longer to book our interview since it was taking already 1month and half/2month to get the first available date and now that all canadian will have to have our interview in Montreal it will be more crowded/busy and harder to get an available date the soonest possible. :s

Also guys it is for K1 visa applicants

Yeah we know. One of the reasons to do a K1 in the west was because you could interview in Vancouver. But if you have to travel to Montreal from the Vancouver area anyhow, why not just get married first? It means a lot more expense for people in the west.

Hopefully the dr in Surrey will stay on the list as well so that can be one less expense of travelling to the east.

I was really hoping they would allow more interviews in Vancouver, by adding IR1/CR1 there, not take some away.

No you will still have to do packet 3 including ds-160 before getting packet 4 and booking an interview.

Well this really sucks! Montreal is pretty expensive to fly to compared to Vancouver.. and doesn't their medical mean you have to do it 3-4 days ahead of the interview? (Which means staying in Montreal even longer..).

You can still do the medical in Surrey.

Unfortunately both places are pretty far from where I am (I'm splat in the middle). Vancouver was just the cheapest option for the both of us as I had family there.

I suspect that this may be one result of the San Bernadino shooter entering the US on a K1 visa. They want to consolidate all the immigrant-type visas in one place so that the same set of eyes are looking at them. I'm betting K1s are going to undergo tighter scrutiny in ALL countries now.

Have the medical there, then you only have to stay 1 night in Montreal! :) cheaper than a week.

Haha, unfortunately then I still have the flights to pay for! It's just a mess, as I was hoping to be in Vancouver or transfer over to them and just pay for the flight. Two flights aren't in my budget at all! Luckily there seems to be some cheaper (hopefully safe..) hotels in Montreal near there. It's still disappointing as it seems like this will add time and expense to a lot of people's visa process. I do get what they're trying to do.. I just think it could have been done a lot better.

I found it wouldve been cheaper to fly twice than stay the week in Montreal. (Monday interview.) Dont stay in too cheap of a hotel... look at reviews!

Best of luck!

wow that is ridiculous!! we are like the closest neighbor, you think they would help canadians out and generally we are a lower threat/risk. however, i really think as a canadian and the fact you can travel and visit freely between both countries, and generally canadians have jobs back home (ie we arent immigrating from a third world country), the CR1/IR1 would be the better visa to apply for. I dont think it takes that much longer and you can enter with a GC and work permit in hand... thoughts??

I am guessing less canadians out west will do K1 and maybe just do CR1 since they have to travel to MTL anyways and that is an uber expensive flight
