We just want some feeback from our fellow VJeyers. My fiancee is finally here. Our plans now is to have a private civil wedding. Soon after we signed the marriage certificate, we will apply for her a SS card under her new marriage name and for the EAD. Is this a good idea to take this route? I've seen on VJ a flow diagram which shows that one should apply a SS first soon after upon arrival to the States. Thx.

It is advisable to wait at least 2 weeks after arrival into the U.S. before applying for a SSN. It takes at least 2 weeks for you to show up in their system.

As long as you marry within 90 days of arrival into the U.S. with the K-1 visa, you can then apply for AOS and EAD. You cannot apply for EAD by itself, you must apply for it along with AOS (or after AOS, if desired).

Good luck.

If it were me I would apply for the SS# first and then after mariage just request a name change due to marriage. She would keep the same #. I believe if you file for SS# after marriage they tell you that she'll have to have her EAD card before they will accept the application.

If I am wrong, somebody else will correct me.

Good Luck!

I applied for my SSN 2 days after I got married, to avoid having to do a name change. I did not have my EAD at the time I went to the SSA office. I applied for AOS and EAD after I applied for my SSN card. Had no problems. You will need your certified marriage certificate if you go after you are married, as well as your passport.

Hi there. I applied for SSN after our marriage. Afterwards we filed for AOS and EAD. Just wait for 2 or more weeks before you go to your local SSA office, just bring your certified marriage certificate and her passport. And if u want, u can also apply for a state id afterwards. Right now, Im waiting for the decision on my AOS and EAD. Goodluck to both of you and especially to my kababayan.
