Did your daughter come to the U.S. with her K-2 Visa at the same time you came with your K-1 Visa?

If so, she can be included in your AOS application.

We had to do a separate AOS application for my daughter because she followed-to-join, and I already had my GC when she arrived in the U.S.

I would schedule an Infopass appointment and see what they say.

K-2's are not eligible for a SSN, until they have their Green Card. When your daughter gets her GC, take it to the SSA office, along with her birth certificate or passport, and they will issue her a number and the card will arrive in the mail within a week.

To schedule an Infopass appointment, you will have to go the USCIS website (www.uscis.gov). Go to the left side of the USCIS home page, and you'll see the words INFOPASS. Click on it and go from there.

Before you panic, I would first double-check with the school system to be sure they really require a SSN to enroll a child. That is what I was told originally when I went to enroll my stepson, but it turns out they didn't need a SSN after all. Don't take the word of the first person you talk to... We didn't need an SSN to enroll him in school OR add him to my health insurance plan. We did get an ITIN number for tax purposes.

We filed separate AOS and AP applications for our stepson, but in the same envelope as my husband's paperwork. I filled out the forms and had my stepson sign them (he was 9 at the time). I think that's what you'll need to do, but by all means, get an Infopass appointment and be sure.

If you are having trouble getting an Infopass appointment soon, try either:

a) Going to the local office if it's not too far away and explain you are having trouble... I did this and they told me a certain time to call and a certain zip code to enter (not mine). It really helped.

B) Call in the evening around 9 or 10 pm. I read here on VJ that cancelled appointments are opened up on the schedule at that time, so you might catch a better appointment that way.

Good luck!

Maya

Many thanks to the Visajourney community for all the help!

goldie,

The girl does not need a SSN to go to kindergarten.

She does need her own I-485 application to adjust status. If you did not submit one for her when you submitted your own, get going on it.

I agree that you do not need a SSN to go to school. My children started school the week after we got here....as long as you live in the school district they have to accept them.

My children have been going to school in the USA without SSN numbers since last Nov. But as others above have said .. all K2 children need to file a seperate I-485 and pay a seperate fee ( currently 225$ for a child under 14 ) Carefully read the instructions for the I-485. My children both had biometrics appointments as well .. they took pictures and one right index finger print. Good Luck with your daughters AOS and don't worry she can go to school without a SSN

goldie,

VJ isn't Jeopardy - you've given us the 2 different answers, what was the question you asked?

A 5 year old does not have to do the full set of 10 fingerprints used for the FBI security check, but they do have to get their photo and indexfinger print taken, used for making the Green Card.

Yodrak
