Answer to "in which occupation do you intend to work in the US?" on DS260?

Hi all

I'n anxiously gearing up to finally pressing 'submit' on my DS-260!

I have a question about how much detail is expected in answer to the question above on the Work/Education/Training page of the form (In which occupation do you intend to work in the US?)

At the moment I am a 'homemaker' as I have a three year old son and found it hard finding suitable work after being made redundant 2 years ago. I have provided my 10yr work history which clearly shows that prior to this I worked in a specific sector.

In answer to the question "In which occupation do you intend to work in the US?" I have kept it fairly brief, saying I have 10yrs experience in this particular sector and intend to follow that line of work, however I would be open to similar roles in other sectors.

Do they expect more detail than this? Should I be showing that I am actively looking for work over there? We will be living in my father-in-law's house and he is also my joint sponsor and will be providing my husband with work, so that can all be attested to. But I've nothing at present to show what I plan once we move.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance!

OK I've found this- http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/352937-ds-230-form-part-1-in-what-occupation-do-you-intend-to-work-in-the-us/ I'm assuming this all still rings true!

Any idea if it's better to put 'to be determined' or my answer above? TIA! x

The form is also used for some work visas so that question is more important for them. As a spouse, your visa is unrelated to working so you can answer homemaker...unknown...undecided... because it doesn't matter if you work or not. Just don't put prostitute, drug dealer, or terrorist :P

Or communist agitator! :D

My ex put down "actor" because that's what he did in the UK, but his first job over here was as a paralegal. It wasn't a big deal -- as Nich says, no one will hold you to it. Congrats -- you're in the home stretch now!

My wife had 9 years in the electronics industry before we married 2 years ago at which time she quit working and became a homemaker. After reading about so many people complaining about immigrants taking American jobs we went with homemaker.

I believe it's just a general question and don't think it's in anyway binding but I couldn't help think anything besides homemaker may draw attention so we stuck with that. We listed her full education and previous job as I think that looks good on the app but since she's a homemaker now and will be one when we enter the US even though she has expressed an interest in working (to be decided later) haha, I though best to play it safe.

Maybe that's just my paranoia but maybe also something to consider...
