Can I travel to Germany from the UK now that I don't have my passport? IR1 Interview completed.

I've just completed my IR1 interview at the London US embassy and am awaiting 'The package'. I stupidly forgot that they take your passport and had booked a trip to Germany from London scheduled before I go to the USA. Is there anyway I can travel without my passport which is now with the embassy? Any help would be much appreciated.

As a EU national, you are require to present a valid travel documents: passport or ID card.

In your case, you can present your ID card to travel.

You cannot use your ID anymore to travel within Europe. You used to be able to use your drivers licence but not anymore. You must have a passport in order to get your boarding pass and also present your passport at German boarder control.

Then my next question is will I get my passport back separately once I receive my 'package' from the embassy containing my IR1 visa or is my passport sealed inside the package where I can't get at it until I am in the USA?

Have you got any issues? Since when did they change that?

Your passport will not be in the sealed envelop. You will need it in order to board your plane in your country of departure.

Really?! Oh awesome! Problem solved if that's true, I really should get it back in time I think. I'm sure I read somewhere that the passport would be in the envelope and border officers would open it?

If there is something like a "National ID Card" (not sure if you have that in the UK?) you can travel with it. I used my German one to travel to the UK last month.

Hope you get your passport back in time though :) Good luck!

British people need a passport to travel to France or Germany from the UK - but not when crossing the border between those and many other European countries. That is because Britain is not part of Schengen area - set up after an agreement signed in a symbolic village bordering three countries.5 Jul 2013

Your passport plus the sealed envelope will be inside a plastic outside wrapper put on it by the courier company with your address. You open the delivery wrapper to get your passport and you leave the sealed paper envelope intact. You throw away the delivery wrapper.
