I have a backup joint sponsor. They are a married couple filing taxes jointly, and most of their income comes from rental property that is in both their names. I know one does the i-864 and the other does the i864a. They asked me how do they split the income that is in both their names--- I don't have a clue

Lets say line 22 of their 1040 says they make 60,000 filed jointly, They can't both put down they make 60,000. It doesn't add up since on the i-864 it asks for the joint sponsors income and the income of the household member (her husband) then has you add them together to get the total household income. It seems the income on line 22 of the 1040 has to be divided someway. I believe the form i864 part 6 line 19 a-c and the form i-864A part 6 lines 2 a-c would be the same and come off the same 1040s. But the sponsors income form i-864 Part 6 line 2 and the household member I-864 part 6 line 5 (also i-864A Part 3 line 2) can't add up to more than what is on the 1040.

But that is the problem. They don't get w-2s since they do not hold jobs. They make their money from rental property, stocks and bonds that is in both their names. My guess is that they just split the income. Or, one could show all the income and the household member could show no income. I would think there would be a better guide on how to handle this.

They have to prove that somehow when they're doing their taxes.

When you fill out your taxes it asks how you made your money and generally each person puts in their share.
