I am reading the instructions for 1040ez and it says for" married filing jointly" our gross income should be at least $20 600.. and ours is a little less then $20 000.. can we file jointly or we should go with "married filing separately" . Is that going to be a problem for i485 later?

you should file "married filing jointly".

- This will help you to prove your bonafide marriage by the time you file for removing of conditions.

That just means you don't HAVE TO file as you are under the filing threshold, but you certainly CAN file and should, too. In short, file away MFJ.

That is telling you that married couples with combined incomes of less than $20,600 will owe no income tax so are not required to file. It does not mean you can't file jointly.

If income tax withholding came out of your paychecks, then you want to file. Suppose $900 total got held for federal taxes. You complete the tax return and end up calculating $0 tax (because your income was low). They refund your $900. If you don't file, the IRS keeps it.
