US is only country with a lottery.

So if someone from Guatemala wants to move to the UK or Australia or Canada do they have a route beyond getting married or having a large portfolio?

in 2015 there were 235,000 people deported.

Of those 235,000 people deported 166,000 of them were from the point if entry or very near the border - they never made it in (nearly half of those stopped at the borders trying to get in already had past criminal records in the US)

That leaves 69,000 that were deported from the interior of the country.. Of those 63,500 (91%) were previously convicted of a crime.

That leaves 5,500. Another 1000+ were removed because they were suspected gang members for drug cartels

That leaves 4,500 - out of the 12,000,000 living here - that were removed for some unknown reason.

Don't break the law and there is almost no chance of being deported.

https://www.ice.gov/removal-statistics

Wait until 2017. Trump will deport 10 million.

You seem to want a Lottery but not excluding Mexico, India, UK etc.

If I have misunderstood what you want you need to be clearer.

Mainly the DV is pointless, if it was not there you could use the visa's for other categories that are backlogged.

I've heard one suggestion I like: 16 of the top 20 universities in the world are in the US and there are many foreign students that attend. If a foreign student attends a major school and has a 3.5 or greater GPA the diploma should come with a green card stapled to it since these are the people that will be job creators in the future. .

We could also do freedom of movement/immigration for those in countries where the flow would be about equal in both directions and the effect is minimal culturally: Canada, UK/EU, Australia, etc.. and take them out of the counting numbers - Assuming an agreement could be made with those countries.

But say we pick a number of new additions per year.. Say 300,000.. Presumably Family visas get priority, then Refugees and other special cases, then investment, etc, etc.. Until you get to those that just want to come for some random reason. They would get whatever is left over of the 300,000 each year assuming there were empty spots. What can be done besides a lottery system to fill those last spots to whittle down the field? Or do people just get placed in a queue and wait forever? I have no idea what the answer is - What do other western countries do?

Again I am not talking about the diversity visa. That's one way, good or bad - it is different than what I mean.

I am talking about certain circumstances that lead people to try and look for a better life - whether they are Mexicans or whatever - Mexicans would be the best example cause of the situation at the border - but anyway my point is those people end up coming in illegally anyway and then you don't even get revenue from it...if there could be a category where people that aren't just wanting to come in for a random reason but also don't fit in any of the current categories, could, under certain circumstances - and I'm not saying they shouldn't be screened, vetted properly, etc and only approved if it was determined it would benefit the country as well, might not be a bad idea to give them temporary residency. Just a thought. You spend more money trying to catch them in the end.

The idea of the GPA is a good one - I think something already exists where those who graduate can pretty easily stay if they find a job, it's just not solely for the GPA.

Ya know, I think it's funny you have some calling me a Trump supporter, and then some wondering why I don't think everyone should be deported. Must mean I'm doing something right....I have always said I don't just fall under one label, not like I take the "conservative playbook" and go with everything in there or the "liberal playbook" and go with everything there. I call it as I see it, issue by issue. It's kind of like when you have a ref in a sports game and both teams complain about him? That usually means he's doin a damn good job.

I really do not understand what you are asking, as has been mentioned there are probably Millions, even Billions who would want to and any allocation would be extremely small compared with those numbers, so if it is not a lottery for those who do not qualify otherwise, what is it?

If you are a high achiever with a good US education then you have options now.

Work Visa sort of the same as the US, Marriage is a bit harder as the financial threshold is higher.

I disagree. There is a reason they build walls around prisons. Highly effective.

You may want to reword that.

Do you realize the border with Mexico is almost 2,000 miles long? Do you realize there are mountains, rivers, even ocean on that border in areas?

Build the wall and send them all back and watch our food prices triple... A 2,000 mile wall is not going to stop people. They will dig under or climb over or find a way around.

Are you willing to have your taxes go up to pay for it and maintain it?

There are Oceans along the border with Mexico, did not know that.

Food prices triple?

No border is 100%, no wall is 100%, locking your door is not 100%, but I bet you still do it.

Yes, Tijuana for example.

Food prices will go up because Mexicans are willing to work our farms for very low wages.

What is it with you guys and these false comparisons? Locking your door is the same as building a 2,000 mile long wall?

You are aware that more Mexicans are leaving the USA then coming in now? Right?

Doesn't matter Boiler...it was a thought...anyhow I think one thing we can all agree on is the system needs to be overhauled...how what why when that's for a different day.

You have many layers. Like onions.

I'll take that as a compliment. :jest:

For the UK I can't really think of any other way, maybe a work visa, but they are starting to make that more difficult now. There used to be a sort of wealthy retired persons visa but that is gone now. If you are non-EEA they basically kind of don't want you anymore. ;)
