ITIN Supporting Documents from Viet Nam - Success

I received the supporting documents back from the IRS today with a letter that the W-7 will now be processed.

What I sent with our joint tax return:

  • Form W-7
  • Red stamp copy of national identification card
  • Red stamp copy of birth certificate
  • Red stamp copy of passport
  • Letter electing to treat spouse as a resident alien, signed by both of us

The "red stamp" copies are certified copies issued by my wife's local UBND. I was worried about the issuing agency restriction for certified copies, but these were accepted.

  • 1 month later...

The tax return was eventually processed using my wife's ITIN. No problems.

Timeline

Thanks for sharing this.. I also did this for me and my wife.. sent to Austin, TX on April 14th, 2016. I haven't heard anything back yet, but it hasn't been that long ago and I expect they have a heavier case load in mid-April than when you sent yours in in February.

Here's the timing from my notes:

  • 2016-02-19 Paperwork received by IRS
  • 2016-03-19 Supporting documents returned by IRS
  • 2016-03-22 ITIN received from IRS
  • 2016-04-19 Tax refund deposited into account

Yes, you will likely see several weeks added to your process due to sending in April. Good luck.
