Phoenix Standoff: Protesters Block Highway, Force Police to Send Trump Supporters Home

Hundreds of cars were forced to make a U-turn less than three miles from a Donald Trump rally today after protesters parked in the highway to block Trump supporters from reaching the event.

The rally was scheduled for 2 pm Eastern in Fountain Hills, Arizona, but was delayed to 3 pm because of the protest and the time needed to tow the blockade of cars off the highway.

I was assigned to cover portions of the rally for Breitbart News and was on my way to the event when traffic moving eastbound on Shea came to a complete halt shortly before 1 pm Eastern. I found myself sitting in a line of cars three lanes wide that stretched ahead and behind me as far as I could see.

At about 1:10 pm an Arizona state trooper and a Scottsdale police vehicle passed with lights flashing and sirens blaring–they were driving eastbound on the westbound side of Shea in order to reach an intersection at divert traffic. They pulled their vehicles into the intersection at Shea and 136th and forced all three eastbound lanes to U-turn. The point of the U-turn was about 2.8 miles from the location of the rally.

I tried to talk to an officer when I reached the front of the line. I told him I was going to the Trump rally, but he said, “Sorry, but you’re going to u-turn.”

Since making a surprise hostage video-inspired endorsement of Donald Trump earlier this month, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has faced a torrent of criticism from bewildered constituents and Republican lawmakers. Yet, Christie has soldiered on, immediately returning to the campaign trail Monday on behalf of Trump following his weeklong vacation, even as he faced increased backlash for skipping outon the funeral of a New Jersey police officer to do so.

I’m “back to work,” Christie assured his New Jersey constituents from a Trump rally in North Carolina on Monday, dismissing widespread criticism from New Jersey media outlets who feared that he planned to continue ignoring his gubernatorial duties to become a full-time Trump surrogate. While Christie held a Trump town hall in Hickory, North Carolina, he sent his lieutenant governor to attend the funeral of 31-year-old Sean Cullen, a New Jersey state trooper who died last week after being hit by a passing vehicle while responding to a car fire.

At the next campaign stop in Vienna, Ohio, Trump repaid Christie for the loyalty.

“Your governor is absentee,” Trump said, taking a swipe at thefairly popular Republican Gov. John Kasich ahead of Tuesday’s Ohio primary.

“I know, ’cause I was there. But I go back and I still work, you know. I have a job, right?” Trump continued. “So, your Gov. Kasich, if you look at him — and I’m being totally impartial — he goes to New Hampshire, he’s living in New Hampshire.”

Trump then paused to look around for his surrogate. “Where’s Chris? Is Chris around?”

“Even more than Chris Christie, he was there!” Trump joked, delivering the punch line that he was searching for.

After the applause began to die down, Trump added, “I hated to do that, but I had to make my point,” with a wink and a shrug.

“So …”

I'm no trump supporter but what the protesters are doing isn't any better than Trump right now

Arrest anybody actively involved in impeding traffic. This is how a lot of people are protesting these days, just blocking traffic. Eventually somebody is going to die as a result of an ambulance being held back and people involved need to be charged as complicit in the death. Then we'll see this sort of thing stop.

I think alot of things Trump does are disgusting(like the thing with Meghan Kelly now) but what the other side is doing is no better, and the candidate the other side will put up is no better.

It makes me real proud of how the police AND protesters AND supporters handled the situation when Trump was here a couple months ago. Yeah there were some disruptions but nothing too terrible.

Protesters clash with SLC police outside Trump rally

SALT LAKE CITY -- Video clips captured outside the Donald Trump rally in Salt Lake City Friday night shows protesters in a shoving match with officers in riot gear.

In the video, the protesters can be heard shouting "Trump Stinks!"

In another clip, protesters appear to tear down a security tent and can be heard yelling "Shut it down!"

FOX 13 also received a report of rocks being thrown at people exiting the Infinity Event Center, where Trump made his first appearance in Salt Lake City this campaign season.
