Returning to the USA after long stay away on 2 year CG

Hi everyone.

I've been out the country now for 5 months away from my partner and I'm returning soon. I was never supposed to be away this long but circumstances came up and I had to stay longer. I'm really worried I will be turned away at customs. Is there anything I can do to not let this happen? Is there any documents I should have? Any advice would be really appreciated.

You should not stay more that 6 months out of US so as not to invalidate your continuous years of residence. If stayed outside US of more than 6 months, you are back to zero on years of residency.

So go back asap.

He's only been out 5 months, why would he need a re-entry permit? Do 2year GCs work differently from 10year ones?

No, they do not work differently.

Some people suggest getting a re-entry permit even for absences of less than 1 year to serve as one piece of evidence the person did not intend to abandon residence.
