Hello everyone!

Apologies, I can't find the thread regarding my question. I recently got my Combo Employment and AP Card. I'd like to work soon and jump into the employment pool! I was wondering if I can lift the restrictions on my SSN using my Combo card or is it the green card that would allow me to do that? I have not received my green card yet (application still pending; December 2015 filer). Would it perhaps depend on the SS location? I currently live in NJ. I also can't seem to find some guide on the Social Security Admin website.

Thank you for your insight everyone!

hi

Green card, the EAD is always temporary, so that's why there are restrictions, when you get your GC, you go back to the same office to change the card

the number never changes, only the card

I think the OP talking about removing the condition on her SS Card.

Reilena,

Yes, you can remove the condition with the EAD/ AP combo. In reality, it does not matter what it says on the Social card once you receive the EAD/ AP combo card. You can now apply for jobs and be fully employed. You can also have the condition removed from your social card with the combo card. It is better that you wait to get your GC since you have to make one more trip to have your permanent residency registered with social.

So, start working now and remove the condition on the social and update your residency on it when you get the GC.

Good luck on the job hunt.

Can't find a guide because one doesn't exist. The EAD is a stopgap until your green card. So of course you cannot lift the restrictions on your ss card.

What is printed on the card is not important because the requirements are the same. Everyone must comply with the I-9 regardless of what the SS card shows.

With an EAD card you are work eligible. Good luck in the job search.

hi

removing conditions is something else, it getting out the legend or phrase valid only for work, since the EAD is only temporary, it will have that sentence until the person gets the GC

but it doesn't matter for work, the permanent social security card doesn't have that sentence, only the name and date

No, they cannot remove the condition text with an EAD.

Yes, but what the SS card shows affects what else is needed to comply with the I-9 requirements. An SS card without conditions counts as a List C document (proof of work authorization), and combined with a List B document (ID like driver's license or foreign passport), that is enough to meet the requirements without any other immigration or work document. An SS card with conditions does not count and they will need some other proof of work authorization.

This is incorrect.

No, you cannot. The restriction listed on the SSN goes along with the EAD. DHS authorization is required to work. The EAD is that DHS authorization. That stipulation printed on the card can only be removed once they become a permanent resident and have a green card. That is when they will not need any extra employment authorization because they are able to legally work as a US permanent resident. No restrictions.

Oh ok. So they can work with the EAD/ AP combo card but the condition can be removed only after getting the GC. Hmmm makes sense. Guess i learned something new today and not listen to those half-bakes in the SSA office!

Which sort of restrictions do you mean? I'm assuming you mean the SSA card that says, "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT" and you want to change to the "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" one?

You should be fine with providing the EAD as it seems you cannot provide either one of these restricted SSA cards by themselves. You should be able to present your EAD and be done, but you may also provide your state ID/DL, and SSA card with EAD. But then again, you can just use your EAD as a category A item. For me and my guy, we want to get the unrestricted one as soon as we can, even though it won't matter too much administratively!
